Supercharged 98 LTD TacoRunner

The back is a little high, but still looks good! Did you remove the big cone bumpstop when you put in the rear coils? If so you could pull those out and instantly drop the rear almost half an inch. It's not really needed with taller coils.

I hope to see this thing in person one of these days. How's the little guy doing?

Maaaaaaan, I didn't even think about that. I'll have to yank those out this weekend, I didn't tell my SO I was lifting "her" truck and she's not fully on board with the new height (she's 5'2".)

He's doing great man, thanks for asking! Growing too fast though.

It's mainly been my Fiance's daily so I haven't done too much to it. I'm itching to get her another vehicle since she complains about the height of the truck and I really wanna play with it more.

I'm gonna temporarily remove the LC rear coils and go back to the 99 talls I had only with a 2.5" spacer this time around. She wants a more "modern" interior too so I'm gearing up for an LED dash light attack, a double DIN and possible a Lexus wood grain wheel (anyone done this?) Also buying parts for a SC rebuild.

Hey Tyler,

I spoke to you on instagram not too long ago. Truck looks great. I was just reading through your thread and saw the deal with the hood. So did you require a Tacoma hood latch, or were you fine with the existing 4runner latch? let me know. Thanks!

Hey man I saw you said you worked for Toyota at another place out west. Have you called the PRA about the arch moulding color? If you give the Vin they should.be able to tell you what that paint code is. I have had to do that on a couple vehicles.

Hey! Glad you found the thread, hopefully some of it is useful.

I ended up needing to space my stock latch forward off the core support about 1/2" and that fixed that.

Thanks man, I ended up finding it in one of the old parts/dealer brochure we had on the shelf. :mullet:

Been a while...

Finally installed my Icon (Stage I) setup that I nabbed during a Black Friday deal a vendor was running. It's only been a few hours but I'm so pleased with how this setup rides compared to what was on there.

I also picked up some 315/75/16 General Grabber AT2s during the big Discount Tire eBay sale. I've still got a few things to knock out before I attempt to run them, namely SCS F5s, some sort of UCA solution and maybe a front bumper? We'll see what happens...

We'll see what happens...

Soooooo the Dynapros were very old and had gotten so loud that I thought I had a dying wheel bearing so the 35's happened sooner than I anticipated.

Spoiler alert: There's a lot of rubbing...

They absolutely don't fit though and if I keep them on the truck it's gonna be a long time before I'm truly satisfied with them.

After getting enough clearance to drive it on the street without any rubbing I took them out for a test run behind my house to see how terrible this endeavor was going to be when the suspension started to work. I'm rubbing the hell out of the rear mudflaps and inner fender lip but I'm not really getting enough flex out of the front to stuff them to where they rub. I still have a lot of material to take out of the pinch welds so I'm ok with this, currently, but still a little confused.

Now if I was still the only one driving this thing I'd pull the bumpers, hammer the dogshit out of the front inner fenders and love my life on 35" tires. I can't do this though because my finace daily drives this thing so it's got to remain "stock-ish" in appearance and because of this I've gotta find a solution with the rear flaps that isn't me throwing them away... (thanks blcktpgsr, if I'm capable of pulling off what you did)

Aside from the obvious clearance issues, my complaints about 35's are gas mileage and acceleration. I think our first tank was around 190mi, I vaguley remember it doing 230 or so on the 33's? I need to pay more attention I guess... As for the acceleration, this thing drives like it weighs 7000lbs. Granted, I pulled the TRD SC off a while ago to rebuild, acceleration MUCH, MUCH worse with the 35's compared to the 33's.

So much so that I've got the Grabbers listed for sale locally in an attempt to step back down to 33's... I love the look of them but the fact that I need a regear and a SC just to get the driving feel back to normal is a bit of a turn-off for me currently. My feelings won't be hurt if they don't sell, I'll just have to do what I've gotta do.

The S/C is not 100% necessary to get the feeling back to normal, but the gearing is. No way around it, putting an S/C on is a common bandaid fix, but you're putting your engine at a huge mechanical disadvantage by increasing the tire size, once you regear it evens everything back out, the engine is back at it normal rev range, and it doesn't fall flat on it's face when you go to take off. Gearing is what makes it possible to run 37's on a truck with a measly 100HP 22RE. The 5VZ in stock form would have absolutely no problem pushing the 35's around with some 4.88's or 5.29's backing it.

That's reassuring, maybe the SC could be sold to offset the cost of the regear. Speaking of, I've only browsed ECGS for a half hour or so but am I correct in figuring $1600 for parts to reagear both diffs?

I know NOTHING about this. :behindsofa:

Have ECGS build the diffs for you, they do awesome work and you know it will be done right. It's not much more than the cost of parts once you get your core cost back.

If you want to look into doing it yourself there are a bunch of tools you'll need you might not have already. There is a lot of excellent information here to get you started http://www.gearinstalls.com/

Oh no, I'd absolutely have them assemble them. That's way over my head...

Like I said, I know nothing about this, is this What I'd need for the front? Which one of these applies to our rear diffs?

Not sure about the rear. The 8" 4cyl would work but the carrier isn't as beefy as the 6cyl. I'd give them a call, they friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable and I'm sure will be glad to help you out.

FWIW, here is what I ordered for my front (got the rear second hand) :

First time seeing this thread. The LS and the miata are both awesome looking rides

That is all.

So the 4Runner is chopped liver?!

Thanks man, I miss the Miata and am currently tossing the idea of selling the Grey LS so that I can take over the 4Runner again and build it how I want.

A regear can be done cheaper than ECGS if you can find a good shop near you to do the install, I'd only trust a shop that specializes in drive train work though, installing gears is kind of outside the realm of normal mechanical knowledge. Nothing against ECGS at all though, they do quality work.

The 4runner is nice, but something about the taco conversion doesn't sit right with me. Maybe it's the use of the fat lip bumper instead of a taco bumper, or maybe it's the black trim instead of chrome (or maybe even body color?) Just doesn't seem to fit.

I also ran 315's (70-17) with just a suspension lift, and boy did it rub! I was mighty tempted by the 315 grabbers during that sale too, but I restrained myself :D

I'm in the same boat... I like it, but it's not 'right' aesthetically...

I'm digging those 35's... keep them, the SC and then re-gear... oh and sell the LS to fund your real dream of running over miata's with your 35's.

I understand, it's a mess aesthetically. I'm not a fan of chrome so I opted for the black grill and had an appointment to have the rear bumper painted body color but I forgot and it slipped further and further down my list of priorities to the point where "I'll fix it with a plate bumper."

As for the fat lip bumper, mine is even fatter than most because of my home-brew brackets, it sits 1.5"-2" further out than it should. I've just grown to ignore it, besides, a plate bumper will fix that too.

I wish I would have too. :D

As of now, it looks like I'm gonna be selling the SC to fund gears sooner rather than later. I haven't lost all hope with the grey LS but there is a noticeable decline in interest. also, the Miata has since been parted out and is currently not even a roller, just a bare chassis. None of the local yards seem to want to come pick it up so maybe I'll pull a Grave Digger and crush the damned thing.
