Supercharged with URD AIC/Timing Calibrator AFR?

For those of you who are running a TRD S/C and have the URD 7th Injector fuel upgrade kit, have you ever checked your air/fuel ratios with a wideband? I installed my 7th injector URD fuel upgrade about 8 months ago. URD states that with 99% of applications, there will be no additional tuning needed since the URD AIC/Timing calibrator is so well made, it needs no tuning. I'm hooking up a wideband next week just to make sure I'm staying around the 11.1-11.8 range that these mods should show. If you have met all of the above criteria, what were your AFR's ;)

I'm running that setup and I have an Innovate Motorsports LC-1 wideband w/a guage on the A-pillar.

The AFR's in closed loop, under boost are about 13.5:1. The URD controller is only able to modify the closed loop AFR's to a certain degree before the ECU starts fighting it and driving them back up to stoich.

The AFR's in open loop go as low as 9.8:1, and that's with a 2.2" pulley. That's way too rich and definitely needs some tuning. Most of the time the AFR's in open loop, under boost are in the 11.0-11.5 range, which is still too rich for peak HP. I'm at 5,500 feet of elevation, and I'm sure the results will vary widely depending on the elevation at which others run.

Point is, the URD base map is not a one-size-fits-all. While low 11's are safe, these engines run safely and make the most power at 11.8-12. IMO, anyone who runs the URD 7th should look into fine tuning it, as there will typically be some extra power to be had, along with some minor fuel savings. At the very least, install a wideband and see where you stand.

BTW, I did not install the fuel pump that came with the kit, so these AFR's are based on the capacity of the stock fuel delivery system. As you can see, I'm actually going to have to remove some fuel from the mix to get where I want to be. I'm convinced that the higher capacity pump is only needed at low elevations and/or with 2.1"/2.0" pulleys.

Nice info, thanks for your input. I am sure I will need to do some additional tuning despite what Gadget says from URD about not needing any additional tuning. Did you ever tinker with the R4 tuning software that came with your 7th kit?

I think Gadget is correct in saying that it doesn't NEED any additional tuning, but like I said, if you do some additional tuning there is probably going to be some extra power/better driveability for you there. The truck will run safely w/the base tune URD provides, but you might be missing out on 5, 10, maybe 15% of it's capability depending on the circumstances.

I've got the R4 software, a BR-3 OBD2 interface, the LogWorks software from Innovate, and CamStudio all running on my laptop via Serial to USB converters. Getting all that stuff running properly is a hurdle by itself. I've started playing with the software and I'm familiar with it, but I haven't started tuning mine yet.

With the 7th injector the tuning, using R4, is pretty straight forward. Get te innovate gauge, not the AEM like me, so you can datalog with it 1000x easier.

Once you are able to log rpm/boost withR4, and AF with the innovate Program, it's incredibly straight forward.

Forgive my grammar, my phone is acting up.

Make sure you have the r4 settings correct, or it will tell you that you're running like 20lbs of boost and confuse the heck out of you.

I haven't dug into it all yet, but as soon as I install the LC-1, I am going to get everything going.

So What type of piggy back systems do you guys run to tune for the 7th injector?

I was debating on going with Haltech, but it also depends on what you guys would recommend.

oi. reading this makes me pretty sure that im just gonna sell my urd 7th injector kit. all i want is to be able to drive without worrying about pinging it to death, im not concerned about making every last hp, especially if it means running 3 + extra computers.

You must have read something out of context or something ;) The URD 7th system is awesome and will definitely eliminate pinging alltogether. This thread was specific for me wanting to do what you don't mind, and that is making every last HP possible. So the URD 7th is perfect for you and me, I just want to tune it for every possible performance gain I can get.

Just so we're clear, we are talking about the URD 7th, not the TRD 7th (there is a huge difference).
The URD 7th fuel upgrade comes with a piggyback called the AIC Timing Calibrator. It comes with software called R4 that we will run in conjuction with a wideband data logger to tweak the air/fuel at specific points to ensure consistent mid 11 a/f are achieved accross the board. That make sense?

right on, i gotcha. ;)

i installed supra injectors yesterday and that pretty much solved the pinging for the most part. not the best torque curve on the world, but feels better to drive.

i already have the 7th injector kit on hand, and a methanol kit too just in case, lol! would you say that the base map on the 7th injector kit will have abtter torque curve?

i like power too, but honestly what kind of numbers are you talking about before and after to add an lt1 and another piggyback, which is a pretty substantial investment.

i just want a safe and smooth torque curve, lol!

If you just want it safe and smooth, just install the 7th injector with the AIC/Timing Calibrator.

ok, i may give the 7th injector a shot here then in the near future. i have to order the fuel fittings since i have the grey blower and it came off a black one, and also didnt include the fuel pump. it did come with the split second though, so ill be doing that as well. between that and the aic im hoping it will be nice and steady without needing constant adjustment hopefully.

when i order the fuel fittings(any info on this? can i buy them at the store probably?) ill also be ordering the tensioner pulley, fuel pump and 2.2 sc pulley, and i have the urd crank pulley on hand to match it. should be pretty, lol!

i also have a methanol kit, but im not sure if thats gonna make it too complicated. i was toying with doing that instead of the 7th. might make it a little much for a daily though.

Ok, first, call Gadgett at URD about what you need to make the 7th fit into the gray one, he designed that system, so he would be who you want to talk to.

2nd, since you have the AIC/Timing calibrator from URD, you won't need the split second. Again, since you don't want to squeeze every bit of horsepower out of your system, you don't need the split second. The split second is for hard core tuning down to the 'T'.

Call Gadgett, and he will set you up. Also, definitely make sure you have the correct spark plugs that URD sells. They are like $10 each but you really need these.
Hope this helps!

edit: No need to run the methanol kit, since you already hve the URD 7th, the methanol kit will not benefit you. It's really either or, and the methanol does require tuning, so according to what you have said you are looking for, the URD 7th is definitely what you want to stick with!

cool, thanks for the help and info man! i did install the correct plugs from URD when i did the supra injectors last weekend. the triple prong densos, cant remember the number, but they came with the 7th injector kit i got.

i got a line on a good tuning shop locally, so ill leave the split second to them depending on how they get it running. though they got my friends stroked h22 with itbs and coil packs running so well he is now dailying it for the first time in five years, so im excited about getting it in now! :girl:

I hate to contradict you man, but this is QUITE far from the truth. The methanol kit will make quite a difference, even with the 7th injector. Take a look at Texas Ace's build on Yotatech for some Dyno numbers...

x2, TA eventually went to a stand alone and just meth, but he has a lot of great info on his thread and what adding meth to his URD 7th did.
Eventually I'll be sportin' a devils on stage 2 on mine. :hungry:
