surface rust?

ok, heading to dealer this afternoon. got finished washing my wifes T4R this afternoon and this is what I found all over the back hatch. probobally 30 of these spots. Is this surface rust? I scrubbed, it is definately rust, but is it coming from underneath or could she have ran thru something that has it rusting on top of the paint, I am somewhat confused as I have never seen this before. Bought the truck in Feb. we live at the beach but the truck has NEVER seen any type of off roading, etc.

According to Toyota they call it "industrial-fallout". Technically its microscopic peices of metal that are on the surface of the paint. I had them all over my White 04. Just use a little cleaner wax/wax and they come right off. Sounds like a common problem according my service guys.

well the service manager at Toyota of Wilmington (luckily I have known him for 7 yrs.) told me to leave it with him for a day and he will take care of that and go over the whole truck for me. I guess it shows up much more common on white than anything else.

I've got those little specks on my back hatch, too. Looked like little pinholes of rust, but I kept it clean over the winter. Wondered what those things were. I've got the galactic gray color, so they don't show up, but you can feel them.

Try using a claybar over those spots. Some people refer to them as rail dust.

Could be from rail shipping. Small metal particles become airborne from the friction of metal train wheels on a metal track. When I was in the car business (Toyota!), we had a bunch of cars stored next to a rail line. They all had some rust flecks on the top and the side facing the rail. (The metal flecks are probably realy hot (from friction) and melt into the paint...........just a theory! Randy

If you happen to see them on the sides of your vehicle, the other possiblity could be brake dust or residue. There was some discussion about a similar issue on the Nissan X-Trail Forum and the consensus was likely due to brake dust sticking to the vehicle and then starting to rust.

Do yourself a favor and go buy some Claybar. I bought a kit by the company "Mother's" and it does the job. Not only will it get rid of these spots, but it also gets rid of all the tiny little specs of gunk that make waxing a pain in the ass. Just wash your truck, do the claybar, then wax it. The waxing will be much easier.

I have the same rust spots on my white 4runner. I live in Colorado and in the winter they put down a substance that keeps the roads from freezing in the winter and in that substance they say there is little pieces of metal. It gets really bad on the back hatch. The clay bar is the key to this problem.

That's where my little specks are located, the back hatch. Haven't noticed them anywhere else. I live in Aspen and they use a lot of magnesium chloride on the roads in winter.
