Surging at idle 05 V8 Limited, help!

Recently purchased an 05 limited with the V8. Has about 175k and runs smooth as glass at any speed other than idle.

I just replaced the plugs thinking it would fix the issue but it didn't. So at idle while stopped I just barely let off the brake and there is a small consistent surge. It's pretty hard to explain. Once I give it gas it goes away and you can't feel it. Stop again at a light and barely let off the brake and it happens again. Anybody experience this or know what to look at? I feel it's consistent with the idle of the motor. I'm stumped.

Surge is the best word I could think of to describe it but it's like a rough idle which you can feel when you just barely let off the brake. Weird. Wonder if a scanner would read anything if hooked up?? Only one way to find out!

It's not a surge that once happens I have to apply more brake. Wish I could describe it better. It's continuous like off, on, off, on but fast with the motor idle. Now I sound like an idiot!

It's so minor that it doesn't affect the tach.

I'm think you maybe feeling something within the transmission, if it were engine related I would think you would definitely notice a change in RPMs.

Have you ever changed the fluid and or added ShutterFixx?

That could be possible and no have never added anything. It shifts smooth as butter.

If I were you I would add Instant ShutterFixx to your transmission, it won't hurt anything and it may solve this issue, if not it will still be good for your transmission, it's a good product.

Buy a tube for $6 to $10 and remove the side filler plug on your transmission and add the Instant ShutterFixx, put the plug back in and your done.

It's sold at most all national auto parts stores.

Doesn't hurt to clean your throttle body, maf sensor and seafoam it while you are at it. If something is affecting your idle, it doesn't hurt to clean them.

Kind of like flossing your car and rinsing it with mouthwash afterwards. ha.

I did it with my 4runner and tundra, now they drive like new. easy to throttle and idle runs smoothly now. Made them sip 1/2 bottle of the seafoam through the vacuum line. let it sit for half an hour to soak, then fired those babies up and drove happily for ten minutes appreciating the new car engine feel.

I have the exact same issue. Bought it new and it has always done it. Like [MENTION=130999]Inv4drZm[/MENTION] said it seems related to A/C compressor running. It picks up enough RPM that I need some brake or it will move. Comes in handy on slight grades though. :shrug:

My 05 V8 limited did the same exact thing. I had the throttle body, MAF and all cleaned and it still did it. I just accepted it as normal.
I don't notice it as much with my 08, but I might be used to it since I naturally push the brake harder now.

My '07 V6 does it too.

I believe it has something to do with the defrost/AC. Specifically the pump clutch. I can hear it click, a RPM increase and it wants to lurch forward just a tad.

Mine has done it since day 1. I have a buddy with a '06 V6 and he said his does it too.

I'm no tech, but I bet it is some sort of throttle sensor that increases the RPM's while the AC/Defrost is active to keep the engine from stalling.

I agree with this. I have been annoyed by this since I bought mine a few months ago. Mine seems to be combining with the driveline clunk because I have an sizeable feel when my A/C cycles. I am continuing to grease to try to get it to go away. I was hoping to tackle the large swings in engine RPM from A/C cycling next. Are you guys saying there is not way to get rid of it and its been there since new?

Seems like it is a specific issue with the 2005 V8's. Keep in mind the 2005 models are different beasts compared to all the other V8 4runners. The design of the engine got more hp than the rest of them, 03-04 were lower, 06-09 were reduced from the 05 model. IF i am correct since last time I checked the 4runner differences.

Not sure about the 07 v6 4runners though.

Have learned to accept it over the years...
Can't say I notice it more or less with the A/C on/off but will def. now keep that in mind.
I've always just told myself it's the beastie ass V8 telling me not to stop! [emoji16]

I just want to clarify that it's not a surge associated with the A/C cycling on and off. That doesn't matter. It's constant and is always there whether or not the A/C kicks in or not.
