Surprisingly stable at high speeds

On I-5 going from San Francisco to Los Angeles and back, I was cruising at 90mph average and going up to 110mph at times to pass slower cars. Even at 110mph it felt pretty stable. I was also surprised at how easily it pulled up to 110mph when floored.

I remember the days of the older T4R's, starting at 80mph it began to get a little scary.

I haven't ever thought the 4runner was stable at high speed. For one if there's any wind it's pretty scary IMO. Go drive a stable car like a Subaru STi or Lancer Evolution. Not only do they have great high speed stability but they have great awd systems to aid in emergency handling. 110 in a 4runner is dumb
 
Going that fast in your 4Runner is foolish. It only feels stable because you're going in a straight(ish) line. Try some evasive maneuvers or slamming on your brakes at 110mph.

If someone drifts into your lane at the last minute (because when they looked over their shoulder before changing lanes, you were a 1/4 mile behind them and maybe they didn't notice you were doing 110mph), your truck is not going to respond in any kind of fashion that could be mistaken as "stable".
 
What is wrong with you to think going 110mph on a public road is ok? You are putting my life and my families life at risk by such a choice , not to mention everyone else on the road.

Yep, it feels stable till something goes wrong, then the yardsale. Just like dopes who drive fast in the rain. Overconfident because it feels stable, then you take out half the freeway because you hit a puddle. Selfish and immature.

He’s just saying that it drives well at 90 for an off-road capable truck, and accelerates well to pass at 110 considering the ‘wimpy’ V6 it has. I’m sure your Subaru or Lancer could do better, but they can’t go off road as well. 90 mph isn’t insane these days - I get passed doing 85 by any number of vehicle types. If you live in a city, I bet you do, too. So while 110 is an unwise speed, it’s no wiser in a Subaru or Lsncer.

ABSOLUTELY it is wiser to go 110 in a STI or Lancer Evolution, lol. Those vehicles were literally purpose built for those speeds.

They weigh 2,000 pounds less, are more aerodynamic, come with Brembo brakes all around stock, and have tires and suspension that can handle those speeds and braking at those speeds.

The tires that come on a 2018 4runner are S rated (112 mph rated) and the tires that come on a 2018 STI are W rated (168 mph rated).


To the OP: Going 110 in a 4runner is idiotic, and like the poster said above, shame on you for driving like that putting other people's lives and their family's lives at risk. Grow the hell up.

The tires on your truck are probably S or T rated and you were literally just at their mph limit risking getting a blowout and killing yourself and/or those around you.

110 in an Evo isn't anything like going 110 in a 4runner.

Tires alone arent rated for past like 80 in most trucks. Trailer tires are even worse. I once witnessed a guy going 80 in a Tahoe pulling a boat. I was merging into the interstate thinking those Chinese trailer tires are going to blow and then one did! Hes lucky he had tandem so he didn't loose the whole thing. Rubber went pretty high into the air, had I been closer it would have hit my car.

Speed is okay when you're alone on the road and in a purpose built car, take it seriously and pre trip inspect the car before you go raiding the roads.
 
This thread confirms the reason I have police and highway patrol on speed dial. I make several calls in a year.
 
Did you hit the governor at 109? They are definitely stable over 100 as long as road is smooth, no wind, tires stay circular[emoji1787],No one els is around. About as stable as me psycho ex girlfriend
 
Ever experience an evasive maneuver at highway speeds in one of these trucks? I have and I would say “stable” is not exactly what came to mind. More like, do I need a change of underpants...

I think it’s all perspective, sure my 96 taco didn’t like speed as much as my 4Runner. Flame away but I agree with the op. These trucks are very stable at speed, of course there better ones out there but these are comfy cruisers. They are heavy enough and have enough sidewall to not make them skittish going in a straight line. I drive all over the west and am regularly passed by semis and others while going 80-85. To the guy that compared it to the sti and evo, f*ck off! Have you done those speeds in those cars? I have and it’s terrifying, they are too light and twitchy. Most grand touring “gt” cars that are made to cruise at high speeds are a little on the heavy side and sprung a little softer for a reason. I also agree that 110 is stupid on the hiway, but am amazed at how many 3/4 ton trucks pass me going close to those speeds.

IMO it’s unwise to do 110 on a public road in any vehicle. If you disagree, that’s fine. I just think you’re missing the OP’s point, that’s all. Nice table, though - lol!
 
This post reminds me of the guy who posted photos of his 4R crawling a picnic bench.
Why post stupidity and expect people to like it?
