Suspension noob questions

So, I'm looking at buying a 4th gen hopefully before next summer and i was hoping if some people could point me in the right direction of what to do for my suspension/wheels setup. So far all i know is i want to get TRD wheels and thats pretty much all i know haha.

So my main question is, whats a decent and not bank breaking suspension setup for light offroading? I'm not looking for any sort of lifts over 3". I also dont know to much about suspesion and I've seen alot of talk about bilstein 5100's, and it appears that theyre only about 400 bucks for 4. Is shocks all i need to lift it? I've read somewhere that they raise up to 2.5" and that's plenty of lift for me.Lastly i want to be able to put some pretty beefy tires on, most likely something like 275/70R17 And if you if you know a good site to get suspension stuff also I'd appreciate the tip! thanks in advance!!

I did actually look through that link I just wanted to see if anyone would steer me away from a spacer lift as I feel like it might be a bit cheap. But again, I done know much. Can anyone confirm or deny what I said about the bilstein 5100's? Is it really only a few hundred bucks and you can get a 2.5 inch lift or am I missing something?

Shocks don't provide the lift. I would recommend studying the "fj cruiser spring and 5100's" combo.http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/78803-compiled-fj-springs-lift-info-4th-gen.html

There are a lot of variables to your questions and that thread I linked has all of the info you need!
 
Spacer lifts will work for light to moderate wheeling, but do have some issues, particularly in terms of allowing possible over extension of the front suspension. If you don't lift the front more than 2 inches or so, and avoid violent bottoming out, the spacer lift will work fine.

The Bilsteins will give you 2+ inches of good reliable lift in the front. You'll still need spacers in the rear, but those can be had for <$100.

Any time you go over about 2.5 inches in the front you're looking at also buying aftermarket upper control arms to get your alignment back into spec. That's another $400 or so.

Okay so just to make sure i have it right, I can go with 5100's in the front and lets say i do 2.5" and then a 1.5" spacer in the rear to adjust for rake. Plus some UCA's and im set?

That's a good basic setup that a lot of people have used, and should work well. When my XREAS gives out, that's the direction I think I'll go next.
 
Okay sounds good. Anyone else have some suggestions or do you guys think 5100's all the way around and adjusted to 2.5" of lift in the front with a 1.5" spacer lift in the backso to get rid of rake and possibly some UCA's is right for me?

If it were me I'd skip the UCAs entirely, or put them on hold until you decide if you need them or not. Save the money.

5100s all around with a spacer in the back will serve you well.
