- Suspension Question - I did a lot of searching -

Hey all! I have been lurking here for a bit and this is my first post.

I have a 1998 4Runner Limited with the lock

I have 190k miles on the original -absolutely- shot suspension.

This will be used for road driving 95% of the time and I have narrowed my choices down between:

Toytec Ultimate Lift Kit

Sonoran Steel 7.2

Ideally I do not want to lift my 4Runner but whatever gets me the best feel for road.

Your recommendations are greatly appreciated. If I can get a screaming deal on an ICON set I might go that route as well.

Thanks again!

Also if anyone needs car audio **** let me know, family runs a business.

We've been happy with the following swap-out done a few weeks ago on my son's '99:
- rear OME 906's
- front Moog coils
- rear Bilstein HD's
- front Pro-Comp ES9000

If I had it to do all over again I would have gone with the Bilsteins up front as well. We wanted a firmer ride for carrying hunting and camping gear.

PS - so that being said, on the classifieds I have a set of new rear Moog coils and new Pro-Comp ES3000 shocks if you're looking for a bit higher stance with the '99 setup. It's a medium feel if you're not going to carry load.

Just search this and other forums, Toytec has great customer service, great products and very fair prices.

I had the toytec ultimate lift on 99 and ABSOLUTLY LOVED it, when I got my 2004, you can guess the first placed I called, lol

I saw your thread and it looked like an interesting option. I have had BMW M3's in the past and went with a slightly cheaper option and ended up spending more in the long run.

I do want to be able to carry some camping gear and a full load of 4 people if needed.

Thanks!

I have searched this forum exhaustively!

I am having the hardest time narrowing this down. Sonoran seems like they do a great job of including every little extra and I have heard some ideas that Toytec's Bilstein dampening is a touch too soft.

x2 on the Sonoran Steel 3.0.. Except don't buy it from them. Get the same parts through other places for much less.

4 Wheel Drive - System 3 - $690.00 : Sonoran Steel, Sonoran Steel Custom Metal Fabrication L.L.C. Custom Toyota Truck Parts

For the coils: Read this thread and Google search the part numbers, you should find a few Toyota parts vendors that sell them for a decent price.

Then just find some OEM replacement shocks from Tokico, Bilstein, etc..

I think THE first question (and info that we need) is... What do you want to do with the rig? It is cheaper to do it right the first time. I should know, I'm on my 6th or 7th version of lift. (I should have gone big first off).

The stock springs ride nice, flex nice but don't carry loads well. (including 99 coils, also LC coils)
OME will ride nice, a little firmer, and carry a load better.

If you see yourself hauling camping gear or 4 people a fair amount I would recommend some Old Man Emu (OME) coils.

Personally I love Bilstein shocks.

^^ this is true. I have swapped out my rear coils twice, rear shocks once, the fronts are going to toytec adjustable coilovers next year too.

Don't kid yourself, get what you will need and get the right stuff. Save if you have to, doing it wrong the first time will just make you have to spend even more than if you did it right the first time.

I agree, right the first time, that's what I'm saying.

I don't mind paying extra for a badass suspension up front. I want a suspension that can do it all except hardcore wheelin'.

I don't want a stiff ride at all but don't need it to ride uber plush. I want to be able to put a subwoofer, camping equipment, etc, without worrying about the suspension.

90% of the time it will be a single driver commuting but on a rig such as a 4Runner I don't think a versatile suspension is too much to ask for

Going with an adjustable front coilover will give you the most flexibility in the long run. You will be able to dial in the exact height/rake you want. They will be forward compatible if in the future you do want increase the lift height. Then you will just replace the rear coils and maybe rear shocks.

As for the rear I would recommend OME 906 coils. On a 98 they should only lift a little after they settle (maybe an inch). The stock coils are a 150# spring rate and the 906 is a 220#. They will handle the weight better. 890 are still taller (maybe 2.5"-3" of lift on a 98).
