Suspension replacement

Well new to the forum and hoping to get some advice... Just purchased an 05 4runner 4x4 Limited V8 with the non adjustable suspension.

I was hoping to get some ideas as to what shocks & struts to replace the existing with and anyone who has done the swap....

I've never replaced structs myself but have done several basic repairs from alternators to starters to radators...

I was just hoping to see if someone would recommend doing it and I know the spring is going to be the hardest part but I think I can do it with the MacPherson Strut Spring Compressor Set. Any ides, suggestions or comments are welcomed... Thanks

Tons of info on here ranging from the install to shocks. The shocks all depend on your usage (amount of time spent on/off road). Definitely something you can handle I would think. Just some basic tools and spring compressor should be all you need.

Welcome,
I've been a member for a few short months, this is one great community!

I had Bilsteins 5100's installed and used my original coil overs that have 100,000 miles. I was looking for a level stance so I raised the adjustable fronts only one notch .085". I believe the new Bilsteins on the back have a longer travel and so it too raised a small amount, which I did not expect.
The front of the running board is 1 inch lower than the back. Of the 4 adjustments I will be going up one more, to the second from the top.

I've read that many novices did install their shocks. I just wanted to let you know what to expect with a mild lift with the Bilsteins. The shocks, installation and alignment cost about $700. I also highly recommend the gsp9700 road force tire balancer. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/perfo...argers-more/173-tire-balancing-must-read.html

Like Ark said...just some basic tools and about 1/2 a day to go all 4 wheels. really no need for the spring compressor if you do it right and are smart about it. i used a strap for the springs and worked like a champ.
Your options are limitless depending on your pocket book.
The FJ swap seems to be everyones 1st step in upgrades. stick around here long enough and you will want all kinds of goodies plus there is a lot of excellent help and info on here to get you from start to finish.

It can be done without the spring compressor, but I recommend it. I rented one from Advance Auto Parts, didn't cost me anything at all. Most parts stores have a free loan a tool program.

Do you just want to do a stock replacement, or are you trying to achieve something different if you replace the coils and shocks?

Some aftermarket high end suspensions you replace the whole front strut assembly, so no need to break apart and reassemble the coil and shock.
