Suspension Update

Hey guys I have an 02 4Runner with OME 881's up front and OME 906's in back. I have had this setup on the truck for a little over 100k and its time to replace some worn out components. The top of one of the OME rear shocks rusted off so I replaced them with some Monroe shocks and they are not valved properly for the lift.

I need help weighing my options. This is my daily driver, I don't wheel much and definitely don't wheel hard enough to justify lifted suspension. I like the look and don't want to go back to stock 02 height. I do frequently pull trailers and load it up with lots of stuff.

Option 1 is to just replace the worn out OME shocks. OK option but I the OME shocks are overpriced and it will still be pretty stiff ride.

Option 2 is to buy stock 99 coils and Bilstein shocks. I would be losing a little bit of the height but I could live with it. I would be concerned that the stock rear coils would sag with the things I do.

Option 3 is to get the Sonoran 1.2 kit. I like this option and know it would handle everything I could throw at it but, as I stated I don't really need the "pure offroad prowess"

Any other options or suggestions you guys would recommend?

I would say go Sonoran steel 1.2 because you get everything you need. Or build your lift. Build it for your needs. Just remember once you start you can't stop. Build for the future.
 
I'd go with another set of 906s if you need them, and Bilstein HD 4600s for shocks. That is a popular setup for small lifts, and many people like the ride combo. If you want to change out the front, replace with same coils and Billy HDs

I agree here. I think Biltein struts/shocks are the way to go. In terms of rear sag when towing/loaded, a stiffer spring that doesn't sag as much will likely ride a bit rougher when unloaded, even with good dampening. It's hard to have it all.

Perhaps go with enough rear rake that you're level when towing but can live with the rake when empty.
 
A little off topic... I just wanted to mention that I've always thought the rims you have looked "ok" but never "great" to me. For some reason, they look great on your rig - kinda "chunky" and solid. I like the subtle lift too. I'm still trying to figure out what shocks to get for my rear lift, but I really need to do maintenance first :)

I have always heard good things about the Sonoran 1.2 kit but I don't know first-hand. Good luck.

Sonoran is a little overpriced for what you get I think. Anything I am missing here? For that price you could have a much more capable sway-a-way front, OME rear combo. Just my .02

Had the same issue

with the stroke of the bil 4600 no being long enough for the 906 springs so the damping was way off. I replaced my bils with the OME 60028 and all fine. Also if your happy with the front end lift doesnt sors sell just rear lift parts?
 
Alright guys, thank you for all the suggestions.

I am way over thinking this. I don't think I can go wrong with the Sonoran 1.2 its pricey but from everything I have read, its a well thought out kit that works great together. I could just do the struts and springs but then I would need to piece together the rest of the kit. I would prefer to just get what I need now and be done with it.

I have searched and for all new parts and after you piece meal it together its really close to the Sonoran price.
 
If you go with Sonoran Steel, another great advantage is that you get access to Steve's vast knowledge and experience. I've had quite a few conversations with him (and wheeled with him too), and his customer service is top notch. Food for thought.
 
Ok Here is an update.

I decided I like the stance how it is and I don't want it any taller. I went ahead and ordered the TRD/Bilstein 5100 combo for the front Im keeping the rear 906 springs and ordered 5100 rear shocks.

I will set the strut on the lowest setting and see how it goes.

My tires are 265/75 R16

Now my next decision is tires. I want BFG A/T tires again but I found out I can only get them in load range E now and that is to heavy of a tire.

I am thinking Toyo Open Country AT2

General grabber at2's I think are worth looking at too, I love mine.

Yeah i agree. I have the grabber at2's and they do offer E Load but also Standard Load (SL) for less weight & better mpg. They have the same look/tread as the BFG ATs with a little more design on the sidewall. I have no complaints about mine. I have 265/70/17 on Tundra 17s
 
Thanks for the heads up on the General AT2, I like the design. I haven't looked for tires in a long time and I just planned on going the BFG AT again until I found out they only come in load range E. That left me searching for a tire I like.
