SUV NEWBIE with Roof rack questions??

Need a little advice on the best way to use the roof rack. What type tie downs should be used? What is the best way to secure the cargo on the rack etc,..? certainly don't want anything coming off in transit. Any advice or links to info would be appreciated.

Only one way to go: ratchet tie down straps. These are the only type of straps that will give you peace of mind and keep your cargo safe. Most people use atrocious tie down methods when securing cargo and it really gets to me to see suitcases and underwear all over the highway.

I have a Thule Playpen basket (with extension) and I totally stack it full of camping equipment for the high country trails. It only stays on because of the strength of the ratchet straps. One or two is all you need, but definitely shop around because some are junk. I would suggest the 1-2" model with the handles. Also, find a high quality roof rack (Yakima, Thule)--you won't be disappointed.

They take a little work at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

Thule Playpen

I just got back from a several hundred mile trip where I used the Thule Playpen cargo basket and a matching Thule cargo net to hold the cargo in place. Had my tent, case of bottled water, couple of camp chairs, propane lantern, stove and bottles all in the cargo basket and didn't loose anything. Still, I will take a look at the ratcheting straps.

When using those ratchet straps becareful: I own a pair and they are great, but when using them on a room rack, you need to be careful. Those straps are really strong, so you can go too tight, just make it tight enough when using them.

I have looked at Thule's but it seems unless you are planning to use them to hold ski items, or golf clubs, they are not big enough for much else. I have been considering those cloth storage boxes, but I have my doubts. Sometimes I think I should just get a 3rd car...a minivan...OH GOD I SAID IT!!! I'M DOOMED!!!
