Did any of You watch NBC Nightly News tonight?
They were showing how dangerous SUVs are and that they dominate dangerous vehicles list. This is from their website:

Interesting that the Chevy Blazer, which they no longer make, is still killing the most people.

Anyone remember when Consumer Reports put outriggers on Isuzu Troopers back in the 80's? I am not extolling the virtues of the Trooper, but at the same time Four Wheeler magazine took several of them (stock!) over the Rubicon Trail and didn't wreck any of them!

The cynic in me just writes it off to entry-level junk catering to folks who think that the center of gravity is just the Earth's core!

Am I being too harsh? If so, sorry...Just a pet peeve of mine, people who don't think when they operate a vehicle...anything is safe if you drive it correctly...I have seen low-slung cars like Hondas on their roofs too. (freak accidents and those "other" drivers not withstanding! Just I don't think rigs crash themselves!)

Several SUVs are on the list of vehicles with the lowest death rates, including the Toyota 4Runner , the Toyota RAV4 and the Lexus RX-300.

Gee, what do those 3 vehicles have in common??

4Runner is on the top of those with lowest death rates...Every time I see something like that it makes me even more proud that I own 4R...:arrow:

Too bad C&D doesn't like at stuff like this when doing comparisons.....

Face it......safe vehicles just take the fun away from everything. Since I've been driving the 4runner, I've been wondering about all the things I'm missing out on with the other "non-safe" SUVs. Walking into your garage to find that your vehicle spontaneously caught fire, having your wheel fall off while going 70mph on the highway......sounds like a fun rollercoaster ride to me!

That research was done on 1999-2002 passenger vehicle models during 2000-03....... that is why there is the Blazer on the list.

Actually, the Blazer is still in production, but only the 2-door model. It's changed very little since it's makeover in 95.

not 80's it was 96 or 97 model year cause I was looking a Rodeo and the salesman was telling me how people where coming back to the dealer looking to return Troopers they just bought, the Trooper was a good reliable vehicle that CR destroyed, Isuzu sued them and they settled cause it was proved that in order to make the vehicle flip you had to practically pull a U-turn and yank the e-brake:

anyone remember the Bronco II, CR said that was a rollover risk, when it rolled the roof got crushed right down to the body, sad for anyone who was sitting in 1

Chevy still has the blazer for sale but I think it's more a fleet vehicle now:

Ok, after going to chevy's website, I see that yes, the Blazer is still in production...not the full-size, just the little (AKA S10) pos. I was thinking the full size one.

Still, I can see why it made the list!

Just saw this story on the local FOX news. They had the 4Runner listed as the #2 vehcile with the lowest death rates. I think it is very impressive that Toyota/Lexus took three of the five top spots (RX330 #4 and RAV4#5). I guess the hood scoop that blocks the drivers view of the road, ugly HVAC controls, and the oddly placed fuel release are not likely to kill somebody. Go figure that the 4Runner finished just one place ahead of the deadly Explorer!

I actually took a tour of the Chevy Blazer/GMC Jimmy plant in Linden, New Jersey a year ago and they were still producing the 2 door and 4 door blazer. The only thing is they were only producing around 50 a day and are due to close the plant in 2005 or 2006. It was scary how many empty places there were in this plant.

sv=single vehicle collision
roll = rollover - single vehicle collision

Of course this report will relate to the third gen not the current model (covers 1999-2002 models) - I am hoping that things are even better with the newer model.

What is even more amusing...I can remember reading an article a year or so ago saying that the Mitsubishi Montero and Sport were terrible for rollover deaths and etc. Look who is at #2 according to C&D?

When C&D are testing vehicles they generally are newer and you don't have fatality figures yet and those figures are for 3rd gen modles and I'm sure the 4th gens should follow suit.

What is interesting with the Chevy Blazer is the huge difference between the 2dr and 4dr models - my guess is the 2dr is one of the most affordable SUVs and hence it is a common pick for younger drivers who want a SUV. The figures in the report are ultimately a function of a number of factors including

- Crash protection and safety features
- Profile of the typical buyer - vehicles which are typically purchased by younger less experienced drivers will pick up a higher accident rate (this is statistics here btw - not picking on any of our younger members on this forum)

The 4Runner not only has a strong crash protection system but it is probably unaffordable for the majority of new drivers. (It is noticeable that the survey focuses on relatively new vehicles - so we are looking at affordability from new here I think)..
