Swapping SE wheels for LE wheels - TPMS question

I just picked up a set of 2007 limited edition wheels and tires that still have the original TPMS units in them. Would this be a direct swap onto my 2008 sport edition? Would I need to get the new/used limited set TPMS adjusted at the dealer? I was hoping since it came off a similar model 4Runner, that it would be a painless swap.

P.S. the tires on mine are Michelin ltx ms2 with about 5k miles on them... So not that painless. :/

You'll have to take it to a pep boys or the like just to have the sensors programmed. They should work with the system without issue though

I did the swap in the garage and luckily no lights! Fyi in case anyone else was doing the swap. Not sure why no light, I thought surely it would throw one.

It might take some time. Also, if you have the original rims nearby it may pick up the signal from them.

Yes I did keep the original. The old set is sitting in garage and 4Runner is parked 10ft away so I guess the distance could have something to do with no throwing a light, however I doubt it as well as the time issue. As soon as the sensor detects a difference, shouldn't a light be thrown? I am no mechanic, just my opinion

The serial number off the TPMS has to be entered into the computer when a new sensor is installed. I've had it done several times. It is most likely still picking up your other wheels. If the light didn't come on yet it will when you take it for a drive.

Thanks for that. The reason I was curious is that my son has a 2014 taco and runs winter tires on steel wheel s with no TPMS.

He was complaining about the light being on all the time until I explained the system to him but I couldn't explain why the spare didn't factor into it except that maybe the spare doesn't have the system installed.

theres a few threads on this but answer is it can take as much as a non stop 50 mile drive & or 2-3hr away from the oe wheels, to trigger the light, and it resets when you park next to them at night. mine have been in the garage for years & the light never comes on except when they get low on air, (under 25psi) fill em up & light goes out

If you haven't gone to a tire shop and had them reprogrammed, the light will eventually come on. If you park near the old tires at night, it will go off for a short bit and appear after a while..

The sensors will work fine with the one in the spare. Same goes if you were to swap over 5th gen wheels. I swapped them over and had them programmed with the sensor in the 4th gen wheel underneath without issue. Same thing applies here.

I agree with this. Take care of the issue in its entirety and for future wheels/mods, and just physically check your tires. I bypassed the dummy light when I got my FJ wheels, because I was not paying $50 a tire to reprogram the sensors, and also the possibility of them dying in the next couple of years as well. Some of the "warning" lights on modern cars are moreso dummy lights. When you wash your truck or are walking out to it just check to make sure your tires dont look flat?

Thanks guys. I've went 5mi away yesterday and 20mi each way today. Based on what you all say, it will eventually come on, maybe sooner if I decide to sell my SE rims with new michelins. I was quoted $20 to reprogram all 4, so will hir that place up if it comes on (and not due to actual low pressure).
