This is my first post here, looking for some pointers, I've searched and not found what I'm looking for.
I recently purchased a 2001 4runner after selling my 5 lug tacoma. It was in good shape, with some standard issues for a 14yr old truck (valve cover slight oil leak, front brake small wobble, etc).
I don't know if someone previously damaged it, or if I did something wrong, but while using 4lo and having some issues, it began grinding periodically ever 4-6 feet while in 4 hi or lo, also requiring a hard re-start to get rid of the flashing dash lights etc. It works fine in 2wd.
I assumed that something was wrong with the front diff, but after some investigating found that the transfer case is not engaging all the way. This also confirms to me that someone (either previous owner or me) did not engage 4lo properly at some point.
No one rebuilds them, I don't want to attempt to rebuild one myself, and don't have tons of $$ to spend anyways, so I got one from the junkyard for 300$, with 10K fewer miles than the current tranny.
I've done a good bit of work on cars before, and swapped the manual transmission on my 1995 tacoma, as well as doing the clutch, all the suspension, and normal maintenance.
Can anyone give me some pointers, other than the Haynes manual, is there anything I'm missing or could get myself into, etc. With something like this I've not done before, I like to read a writeup, look at pics several times to mentally do the process before actually tackling it.
