Synthetic Motor Oil for 4.7 V8?

I have always run synthetic oil in all of my vehicles, and I never seen less then 200,000 miles. My 06 V8 has synthetic oil since its first oil change. It now has 56,000+ miles and has never used a drop.

For they guys that are going 7500 miles and longer, are you changing the filter halfway? Or just relying on a good quality filter? Or both???
I'm also running synthetic but haven't gone over 6k yet. Just wondering. Thanks!

The Toyota YZZD3 or something like that is good, however the OEM Denso 2004 sourced from Japan are rated at 7.5k on dino oil.

It's an 04 so sealed transmission. I would feel better changing it, but at the same time I don't want to mess with it. I don't know. I'm not going to worry about it right now.:lookout:

Don't waste your time or money, there is an idiot light on the dash that will indicate any damage to the fluid. This is definitely a case of "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

Walmart sells either Penzoil or Castrol 5W30 Syn for $5 a quart. I go 5000 between changes and have a horrible commute everyday in stop and go. Why risk the alternative at that price?

ANY synthetic in 4Runner engines (V6-8) is overkill. You can safely run synthetic oil and quality filter for 10/12K or one year. To be sure you can send a sample to a lab and they will let you know exactly how long you can safely run the oil and how well your filter is working. It has been proven (through UOAs) that one year on synthetic is safe.

A quality filter (M1, Pure1, K&N, OEM, Amsoil Ea, etc) will last one year, regardless of miles.

Providing I'm putting enough miles on the car, I run full syn. I'm currently maintaining 5 vehicles; 2 use full syn and go 8,000 miles (the T4R tow vehicle) and 10,000 miles (Mustang) between changes, 1 uses syn blend at 5,000 change freq (g/f's Stang due to her driving style) and dino at 3,000 miles in the other 2 "beaters".

Seriously, this is one of the best engines you can buy.

I read up on it on the bobistheoilguy forums. Not a bad word to be said, 12k changes on Synth with ease, 5-8k changes on dino.... no problems based on oil analysis.

They find this engine a bit "boring" actually since it doesn't give them any interesting oil analysis numbers to dissect.

One other thing I learned there (not sure if it's true). The Japanese built V8 (4Runner, Land Cruiser) has forged internals (best). The US build version (Tundra, Sequoia) has cast.

Now that I have the PITA 4.7's oil to change.....didn't want to be dropping the skid plate every couple months.

Lots of good reasons to drop the skid, but it's not required.

I've read that before, but it's not for me. I just can't seem to get to it, thus requiring me to drop the skid plate. Thanks for trying!

I'm not convinced that any dino or blend for that matter can adequately perform beyond 8,000 miles which is why I use full syn in my T4R V6 which is my tow vehicle. I'll chnage it a bit early at 8,000 miles only BECAUSE I tow but if for some reason I go to 10,000 miles or a bit more I'm not in panic-mode.

I was involved and trained in oil analysis many years ago at one of the plants I used to work at so I know enough to be dangerous. As far as oil analysis, I can perform an oil and filter change for a bit more than the cost of an analysis plus, I figure if I'm getting under the vehicle to pull a sample I may as well just do the oil change (as much as the "geek" in me would love to get some analysis data).

I've run many cars over 200k without ever opening the engine, on Mobil1 15W50 (what they now call "Extended Performance", not the cheapened Mobil1).

can you elaborate on this... cheapened M1. I've been using the extended performance occasionally. But when WalMart has a sale on the 6qt jugs of reg M1, I use that.

one of my concerns is short trips. I used to live very close to work and the engine would not get up to temp by the time I arrived. That is not so much of a concern now, but I still don't get up to operating temp for 15 mins.

Does anyone run full synthetic oil in your 4th gen with a V8? I have been thinking about it because of things I've read about amazingly long lasting engine life on it and cold weather winter protection.

Any thoughts?

0W20 or 5W30 in ??

In my 2008 V8 4.7L 4Runner, I have been running Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W30 and then my Toyota dealer put Toyota Synthetic 0W20 during my last oil change. Is Synthetic 0W20 acceptable in my 4.7 V8 engine? What synthetic weight should I be running from here on out 0W20 or 5W30?

Bought my 04 V8 brand new....and have been running Mobil 1 with a M1 filter for 145K miles now. 5K-7K mile change intervals and WalMart now carry's the 5 quart 5w-30 for $27. Sometimes they run a special for around $23 bucks but ya have to be quick!!! Agree....the key is good oil and maintenance and it should last for quite some time. I have Amsoil products now everywhere else in the truck....PS, Transfer, Diff's and brake fluid. Toyota OEM radiator juice. Still have to put some Amsoil in the tranny....and they do make a WS version for the 04.

Ditto on the Mobile 1 full syn @ Walmart - aprox $5 quart, then you can feel better waiting for the light to stay on, then change.
