Synthetic oil change price question

I made an appointment at the local Toyota dealership for an oil change tomorrow morning. It's the same dealership my dad used to take the Runner before I bought it from him in November. The car is a 2001 SR5 4x4 with 54k miles on it. It still has the 7yr/100k extended warranty and that's one reason I want to take it there. Another reason is that I trust the Toyota dealership to put in NEW and clean oil.
Anyway, I want to switch to a synthetic oil starting tomorrow as the car is getting older and from what I read, it seems like a good idea at this point.
2 questions. They quoted me $70 for the synthetic oil change, whereas the regular oil change is $35, is that reasonable? I used to have synthetic oil changes on my Audi but since the regular maintenance was free, I was only charged $15 difference for synthetic.
Second, with synthetic oil, does the oil change interval increase from 3/5k to 8k/10k?

synthetic just sticks together better, so it will flow better and not run right off. the reason people change oil at 3-5 (when 3 hit for me i change it) it to keep dirt, grime, and other crap u dont want in you engine out, so changing 3-4 is best! never go to 10!!! slidgemonster can come up! not good!


here is a link recently about a guy with sludge problems because his newly bought 4runners oil wasnt changed reguarly, i work at a shop and if u forget to change it, sludge dosnt take long to take over.... big problem

I've had few cars (around 10) thru' my life. And I've maintained them all the same and for gas engines I change oil on 3-5k miles and on diesel engines 5-10k and I've never had any problems with sludge... The thing about oil that usually when you change it, it's quite unused. it could run 10k miles more and wouldn't be a problem. If you fail to add oil when it burns or use a very bad type of oil (I've never seen that in iceland tho') it might get damaged...
The one in the linked thread looks like it had has some water damaged or something different than oil put on it... Very strange. On my 5 years of fixing cars I've never seen this, 'cept for one case where the head gasket was blown.

Price for DIY synthetic change w/ Mobil 1 5w30 and Mobil 1 filter. I just bought all this last night as I need to change the oil this week.

5 quart jug $22 1 extra quart $5 or so M1 filter $10
So even to change it myself it costs me over $35. I think $70 is too high, they are not paying twice as much for the oil alone as you get the same filter either way. $15 extra sounds far more justifiable to me
Mine is an 02 w/ 74k also still under the 7/100k, both platinum and the certified used deal. Changing the fluids myself has no effect on the warranty. I just keep all receipts and a good record of dates and mileage, do that and they cannot legally deny a warranty claim based simply on the fact that you chnaged the oil yourself.

i just switched over and did it myself for 30 bones. its not hard. took about 15 min.

Had mine done at Sears Auto Center for $19 plus the price of oil (~$25). So all together $45.

$70 is too high, but then again, the stealership will probably offer you a cup of coffee :biggrin2: Do you like THEIR coffee that much

I purchased a case of Toyota filters and my own synthetic oil-
and I have the dealership do the oil changes for me. My cost is $15.96 or some such figure for their labor. This way they are recording the interval of your servicing. And they throw in the little fiber washer for the drain plug., which I see a lot of people do without.

Yes you can likely extend your service interval on your oil changes running synthetic-but a regular oil change is still very highly recommended. I rarely let mine get more than about 6K miles between changes and I use the 5w-30 Mobil One. However, my last oil change was 8K and that was out of character for my rides.
