Synthetic or no?

Hello i have a quick question for the forum regarding synthetic oils. I have a 97 SR5 w 130K would it be beneficial to use synthetic if so what kind do you recommend if not what is the recommended conventional oil thanks in advance

I would and did with my 4runner with 200k

it's a surperior product. Plus longer oil change intervals are a plus.
Most synthetic manufactures say change every 5-6k but it's been proven many times most synthetic oils still have much more life at 10k than dino oils do at 3k
 
I just put synthetic oil in my 4R for the first time. So far, so good. I can't said that i feel it different, or is better. Looks like with synthetic oil the engine can perform better. And am not sure, but i was told, that once you go synthetic, you can't go back to regular oil. If some one knows more about this, could you explain?
 
I have done non syn ever since i have had it, only because i ever knew the previous owner to tell what was ran through it before, plus i cant afford any more leaks, and yes you can go back to regular after switching to synthetic. IF you are concerned about MPG's i still get 20mpg and am using non.

i've looked into oils extensively since i own a aircooled vw, they have very specific zinc recommendations required for the oil in those motors and in the 4 years or so i've been looking into and talking about oils i find that 80% of the people out there, their eyes just gloss over when you start talking viscosities and all of the rest. i find it's better to just make a few recommendations
and the reasons why you should pick a few of those oils.

but yeah great link man, really good link, i just think with the sort of basic questions being asked here that might be a bit much, but then again hopefully alot of us can learn from this, i'm not saying to post links like this, in fact more general info is always great!!!

My girlfriend cant belive how interested I am in 4runners and that there is actaully a website for people like me to talk about 4runners.

exactly, most people can g.a.f. about the science of it, just give them a few good oils to choose from lol,

my girl makes fun of me when i play COD with some fo you guys on the xbox, something along the lines of "let me get this striaght you and your nerdy 4runner freinds are now playing on your nerdy xbox talking about 4runners while playing video games......your lucky i love you"

My thoughts on synthetics allowing you to not have change your oil very often are this. Aren't you still going to collect the same amount of particulates from the outside world and other junk in your oil as you would with conventionals? Seems like you would still want to change it at least twice a year or more if you are going offroad.

My opinions are in no way based on fact. Feel free so share your dissenting opinions.

Yes, and your engine will still produce the same amount of carbon which will contaminate the oil. However, synthetic oils can withstand higher heat than conventional before they start to break down. So, your best bet is to run the oil, yet simply change the filter every few thousand miles or so. For longevity, that will give you the best of both worlds.

Well, the idea is that the synths lubricate better which causes less wear and less particulates. I am currently running Amsoil w/ the Amsoil filter and I have about 8K and my oil looks new still (Amsoil's recommended interval is 15K for severe use or 25K regular - IF you use their filter too). Pretty crazy, but the last time I changed mine at 15K (which is about once a year), it still looked like it could go the 25K, but I follow the severe recommendations because I am prettyhard on mine living in the mtns and all.
 
I see, I may have to try some out next oil change. I just always figured with PCV constanly circulating air into your crankcase, you are bound to get some dirty ass oil after 15k, I guess that is what your filter is for and changing it out makes sense.
 
The reason Amsoil's intervals are so long is less because of the oil itself and more because their filters have some patented "nanofiber" technology which they claim is much more efficient than a normal oil filter.

Haha....that's funny. Put the word "nano" in your product description and it is instantly better. Most folks think that this term is representative of something scientific....when it simply refers to a power of 10. (a nano meter = 1x10^-9 m)

Actually sythetic oil still has some normal oil in it, they add some additives that are in non-sythetic oil. Some sythetic oil is a blend with regular oil and some sythetic is based on normal oil and processed. You can even mix the oil and make your own blend. Of course it is not recommended and you shouldn't go back and forth between the oils.

I would say if you want to switch back, go ahead, but then try and stick with whatever oil you put in. Sometimes the sythetic oil changes formula, I know my Mobil one changes ever so often.

Ya that why when I am trying to pick up chicks I always ask them if they would like to see my nanodong. It works every time, and I never disapoint.
 
the way i look at it is they roll of the line with conventional so why change it? if it aint broke dont fix it! haha i know in some newer cars they are equipped with synthetic but ill stick with conventional. and i will never go back and forth between the two.
