Synthetic or no?

Here is my experience with synthetic oil.

I have a Jeep Cherokee that I've just retired with 258K miles. At about 200K I decided she had been so good that I would start running synthetic oil in her. So I changed the oil to Mobil 1 full synthetic and new filter. Almost immediately it started a very noticeable almost loud ticking sound from the motor. After a few hundred miles I said screw this, drained the oil, new filter and went back with the Castrol GTX I had used for the last 50K miles. The ticking went away shortly after. Now at 258K the motor still seems to have many miles left but unfortunately the vehicle overall just has to many little problems. Why did it start ticking? I have no idea. I do know that 258K on conventional oil is hard to argue with.

After that experience I'm a little afraid to put synthetic in a high miles vehicle and will not be using synthetic in my current high miles 4runner. That said I do run synthetic in my Yamaha FZ6 (600cc) motorcycle that only has 3500 miles.

Yes switching over in the 200k range my be a little too late lol.

I switched over @ 98k, still no oil leaks @ 111k and runs fine still. Oil is not as dirty between changes.

I have an oil sample kit which I will be doing next oil change and sending it off. They'll give you a pretty good idea about how far you can go between oil changes and the content in the oil. I suggest alot of people start doing it. Alot of guys on Tundrasolutions do it. The results are amazing. The 2uzfe if taken care of will last a long time. Not much if at all any garbage in the oil between changes.

i switched over to a blend syn not too long ago at about 190K mi. on the odo,
before i did the syn, i also did the motovac cleaning system at the same time.

i'm at 205K now with no leaks and tics, everything is fine and to be honest she is a little quiter and purring at a sweet 650 idle, so yeah take that for twhat you will, i'm not going to make any arguments either way on the syn, it's a rabbit hole in my opinion, but it has been working great for me personally so far.

ok i went ahead and went with mobil1 today so far so good being my first runner i was intrigued by the location of the filter it definitely took a min to locate it but all and all I'm pleased I'll be sure to update my experiences
