T-case breather - PN or extend it?

2001 multimode t-case (VF3AM), the gasket around the shifter was leaking and I just replaced it this afternoon. While I had the center console and shifter out, I noticed there's a breather just ahead of the t-case shifter that was pretty corroded and I'm kinda wondering if it got plugged and the t-case got hot and built too much pressure and blew that shifter gasket.

Anyone replace that thing? Is this the right part: Just a moment...?

Or, has anyone extended that breather into the engine compartment, like we do the rear diff breather up into the fuel filler neck? I hate deep water but it's sort of unavoidable for a lot of the trails around here, and I'm sure I've at least gotten that breather wet before.

I plan to extend mine when I do a body lift. There's not enough clearance to do it without pulling the trans.. so I haven't messed with it yet.

That's the correct part number. It's a press fit if I remember correctly. It vents the area between the transmission output and transfer case input so there isn't any fluid in that area if your transmission/transfer case seals are good.

If you are doing that, you'll also want to do the main transmission breather too - it is up near the front and goes up the bellhousing a bit.

Funny thing - the 2WD transmission doesn't have the little extension/lift on the trans breather.

I extended mine to an arb breather kit into the engine bay. If you get these 5/8” push fittings it literally fits perfect. You just have to take the cap off the breather and file the lip down just a little so the nipple is flush all the way around. Then the push fitting goes right on and seals. Then can connect the arb plastic tube to it. Did similar for the transmission breather, that one is a lot more difficult to reach though.
