T4R '08 satellite radio questions

Hey all, I purchased a new 4Runner yesterday. Black, V8, sport edition, and jbl 10 speaker stereo. This is a very nice truck and I am very pleased.

Thanks for all of the great info on this site as well.

I have some questions about satellite radio. I would like to have sirius installed and my stereo is sat ready. Do I need to go to the dealer for this? Does best buy or circuit city do this? Are there pitfalls I need to be aware of? Any info would be greatly appreciated as I would like to have this put in later this week if possible and I am trying to research the pertinent info.

As far as I know you will have to get the Sirius controller from Toyota. Congrats on the new Runner! Ask your salesman if they can get it for you at their cost. The install isn't all that bad just time consuming if you go by toyota's instructions. If I were to do it again I would hide the antenna like I saw somewhere on this site. That's on my SR5, might not work on your sport. I have the XM unit and the sound is good.

My XM was a dealer installed option. The radio is sat. ready I just need to have them hook it up . I made it part of the deal when I bought it.

I would go with XM , since the 2 company's are 1 in the same . This way you have no external stuff , it's clan and all runs through the radio.

Can someone who has hooked up XM/Sirius Satellite to their JBL chime in? Do you have to buy anything extra or do you just need to buy a service subscription?

You need to buy the receiver and fit kit. Don't know if you can get a Sirius kit through Toyota but you should be able to get XM still.

Just buy the parts and install it yourself.

The parts you need are a TOYSC1 and a SCC1. Should run you around $160 retail. It's a plug and play kit... all you have to do is mount the antenna, everything else can be hidden behind the dash or elsewhere and will act just like you had sirius right from the factory.

I used the TOY-SC1 and a dock for my portable that was compatible (SVCDOC1). The TOY-SC1 will be a must, and if you want Sirius only in the T4R, then the SCC1 is the best option. They'll both fit in the black dropdown panel under the glove box and aside from the antenna, you'll never see a single piece of the install.

If, like me, you want to be able to have 1 tuner in multiple places (cars, shop, home) then you can do what I've done and bought a portable and just install docks in various places. I installed mine, "on its back" on the SVCDOC/cradle in the "hidden glove box", totally out of the way but I can reach it to take it out and put it in my Tundra, Trailblazer, home or shop docks, or in a "boom box" made for my tuner (Sportster 4) and take it out on the boat, etc.

Look through the posts here too, there is a good thread on mounting your antenna in one of the leading edges of the roof racks on 4Rs. I didn't go that route, but you may want to try it.

You just need to buy the parts (TOYSC1 & SCC1) or the TOYSC1 and a dock that works with a portable radio you already have - I know most Sirius portables work with the TOYSC1, but cannot comment on any XM solutions as I am and have been a Sirius user since day 1. (Getting XM in my GMs doesn't count. I didn't install them...only have 1 active XM sub as it is, in the wife's car.)

Once you buy the necessary sat rad parts, the only recurring cost is the Sirius (or XM) subscription.
