Got my Bilstiens in this weekend as well as a new KYB steering stabilizer. Put them all on and with the earlier addition of my Alcan springs the old girl rides like a dream. My wife said, and I quote "holy crap, this thing doesn't feel like an old truck anymore". The best part was I thought I was gonna being doing a timing chain replacement to tackle my idle issue. But with the help of the second oppinion of another mechanic I decided to go ahead and change all the vacum lines first and pow, idle issue is gone. The 22RE is purrin like a kitten and I didnt have to tear the engine half way apart. Now if I could just find the pin hole coolant and power steering fluid leaks Id have a brand new 23 year old vehicle.

Feels good when the little things fix the problem doesn't it. Vacuum leaks tend to cause annoying problems I've found in the past. Lesson learned, get older car...install all new vacuum lines.

Bilsteins are the best (but I got Gabriels for now!) I have an '89 and I just read through your earlier posts trying to figure out what idling problems you were having. Mine idles very high when it's cold but then hits a normal sounding idle after it's warmed up and stays normal. It's a DLX so no tach.

I wanted to ask how many vacuum lines the 22RE has and do you have the part numbers? Do you just change the hoses or are there fluids or anything to worry about? I know...pretty newb qustion. I suspect "vacuum" means they only carry air...

Nervo all you need to do is get a diagram of the vacuum lines and pick up a few feet of the sizes you need. Just tell that parts store what size tube you need and that it is for vacuum lines. I recommend putting a piece of tape on all them and simply pull one at a time and cut to length. Very easy, just take your time and get them all hooked back up correctly.

mine does the same thing even after replacing the vacum lines. idles high when its cold for about 60 sec then comes down to 750rpms. i think that is just the cold start injector working and seems to be normal. someone correct me if im wrong though.

also,

crutchy is right, old car get all new vacum lines from the start. for the 22RE there are two sizes you can get from auto zone for about $1.50 a foot. I got 10 feet of the small lines and 5 feet of the medium lines and had left overs. There is a third size of larger lines that are pre-formed that you will need to get from toyota. I still need to get those, but the truck is running great after simply doing the small and med. lines.
