Tablet for radio?

so I've looked around found a previous thread but have only seen one person do this. Has anyone else setup a tablet in place of the standard radio? Nexus 7?

Or tried any of the China android 7" radio touch screens?

Well I did try a chinese knock off tablet, it was a $100 lesson. I currently use a Galaxy Tab3 in my 4runner. I don't have a head unit. I run the auxiliary output to a switch(so I have an auxiliary input for my phone) to a ground loop isolator, then to a level control, then to a 4 channel amp.

I can stream Pandora, but it doesn't have a "radio". I get my emails and texts on it, I make and take calls on it(connected to my phone). I have over 4000 songs saved on it, I use PowerAmp as a player. It has navigation, internet searches, FB, Instagram and I use Car Home Ultra to navigate screens and apps.

I should add, this is NOT plug and play, there are learning curves and growing pains. No app is perfect, and most have disappointed me in some way. I use Tasker to get some basic car like functions, like starting up when I power the car, and going to a certain screen, and shutting off the media player. Car Home Ultra is very nice, but lacks an easy way to shut it down automatically. PowerAmp is by far the best music player, but it doesn't always load the metadata, so I get a black screen on some music, or "unknown artist".

Still overall this an awesome way to go. Recently my wife decided I had too many toys and she wanted one too, so I installed my high end Pioneer NAV/Radio/bluetooth/Ipod headunit I had in y L/C in her car. So I made a mount for the L/C and wired it up to work like it does in the 4runner, I had previously done something similar for my motorhome too. So I simply move the tablet from vehicle to vehicle as needed.

I've got an OUKU brand android navigation unit in my rig...was like 250.00 on ebay. I've had it in there since the first of the year and so far, not many complaints...It literally does EVERYTHING! Cost was right, looks and sounds good, etc etc etc...I have heard about people not having good luck with them, maybe that the quality is hit or miss IDK.

If you do try one out, get the android NOT the windows unit...Also get the Capacitive touch screen not the resistive one. Look around for the latest version of software.

The only thing mine has done that's a little sketchy is this...Whenever I turn the unit on and off in rapid succession, it seems to crash some apps. or have a hard time rebooting. usually all I have to do is push the small reset button with a toothpick or something, then all is well...Every now and then, maybe a once a month, an app will crash, and I'll reset it. not a big deal to me considering all the things this unit does.

Don't replace the radio, complement it with a tablet.

I thought about putting one in the stereo DIN spot but the viewing angle is crap unless you are one short person.

I use Bluetooth and it sounds GREAT! I also have the option of directly playing from USB or an aux cable.

I have to agree about the viewing angle, that is why I didn't mount mine their either. I originally used mine through the aux cord to my head unit too, but THAT Pioneer was older and not as refined. So I took it out and went straight to the amp, as good a sound as any head unit I've ever had.

I also mounted it on a Ram Mount system, which is not perfect, but it works OK. I left my double Din unused because I felt I'd one day mount a CB and an Icom radio. If I ever build it for offroading that is. Yours looks like it interferes with the steering wheel, may just be an optical illusion. This is my current mount, with no tablet in it.

Mine is actually about 4-5 inches from the steering wheel so no issues there.

I wouldn't get a cheapo Chinese tablet. You want to get one with a decent sound processor. That is why I recommend the Nexus 7 v2.
