Taco E-locker Question

Does $650 for a complete Taco rear end with e-locker and switch seem steep? If I remember correctly I've heard guys finding them for $300-400. Is there anything to look for as far as issues that may come up down the road? I don't want to spend the money and find out it doesn't work or find out there were signs I should have been able to see.

I usually see them for $300-$400 for the 3rd member only. If you could find one complete drum to drum for that price, then it's a steal. $650 for everything including the switch is a good price IMO. I've seen people asking around $850-$900 for that setup. I'd be checking TTORA and craigslist for deals. Yotatech or Tacomaworld may have something too; I don't frequent those websites much.

As far as what to check for, I can't help you there.

They are not the same axle housing, they start off the same but the Tacoma has spring perches for LEAF SPRING suspension and no sway bar. The 4Runner is set up with a 4 Link suspension and brackets to accomodate. The only thing you will be able to use is the 3rd and to modify your housing to fit by moving a stud and cutting a notch for the actuator, and any other electronics it comes with.

Btw, theres a 4.10 elocker pumpkin with harness and switch on TTORA Classifieds right now.. theres always a few elockers there.

I know that the taco uses leaf springs so some welding would be necessary to modify the axel to bolt up. I talked to the guy and he has the switch but no wiring harness and ecu. I saw Singtoes thread on modifying the factory 4runner axel to accommodate the e-locker 3rd but I'm trying to figure out if all that is worth it. An Aussie locker seems to sound like a good option and then put an ARB up front down the line. This is my weekend driver since I have a company car during the week but I'm not sure how quickly I can get the taco axel modified to swap it out.

That is a bit high. Especially since you might not be able to use it, cuz you don't have leaf springs. I bought my e locker for 450 from a junk yard and they are generally higher priced than civilian prices.

I would much rather modify a stock non-elocked 4runner axle to accept an elocked 3rd rather than cut the leaf perches off a Taco axle and convert it to a coil sprung 4runner axle. Elocked 3rds go regularly on ebay, CL, ttora, etc.. for ~$350-500.

My honest opinion. Cut the 4runner housing to accept the e-locker. super easy and fast.

Axles from the toca and the 4runner are the same.

Welding the 4 link to to a toca axle is hard work.

Using a 4runner axle on a Taco is much easier.

Wiring is a breeze, I used the Factory ECM but could have gone with 2 relays just as easy.

I like Taco diff because it has the 4:10 ratio.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Singtoe, Thanks for the info. I'll be re-gearing to 5.29's soon as I get my 35's on so I'm not super concerned with the gearing. I think I'll just go the route you took and cut the 4runner axel to take the Taco 3rd.
