Tailgate electrical issues

The other day I went out to my 87 4runner and found the battery dead. I heard a ticking noise in the side panel directly behind the drivers seat. I remove the panel and found the relay board was creating the ticking. The board is for all of the functions of the tailgate. I unplugged it, charged the battery and haven't had an issue with it. I am stumped as where to begin to troubleshoot it. Any ideas?

I had similar problems with a tailgate, tho not the relay board. An excellent, step by step process for testing and repairing the whole tailgate-relay circuit can be found at 4crawler.org under the heading "Rear window cheap tricks." My tailgate was so rotted, I just took it off. I've got a rear window regulator with good motor for sale if you find you need one. Good luck.

troubleshooting electricity is fun, and the easiest thing anyone can do. start at your voltage source and work your way forward of the circuit.
in this case, you could have a relay with a short across it, causing a little bit of voltage to go to your other component.
source----> problem. fastest and easiest way to fix electrical. oh and if your gauges are not reading correctly (like them saying 0) check the ground on your sensor. nearly all sensors i have dealt with are ground adjusting sensors.
