Tailgate Glass Problem

I've got a 92 4Runner and the rear glass doesn't go up or down.The motor turns both ways but nothing happens.I can't see the drive gear on the motor to see if its turning the regulator.Does this sound like a regulator problem?

ok it moves both ways but is it getting power ? check it at the switch as well as the motor

The electric motor operates but does not move the linkage to raise and lower the glass.I can manually lift and lower the glass but once in either position the glass dooesn't move allowing me to still drive with the glass up.The big problem is ,someone has to activate the switch while I manipulate the glass.

Take the tailgate cover off and look at the linkages and gears while someone operates the switch.

If you can confirm that the motor is working it sounds like it is definately the regulator.

I just had my rear window regulator repaired. Like yours the motor was working but the window wasn't moving. Turned out to be the brackets that attached the regulator arms to the window, they were rusted and broken. The repair shop was able to replace those without having to replace the entire regulator.

I've pulled the inside cover off and can watch the linkage move as I lift the glass.I was just hoping that there was a cheap fix for this.My understanding is that the assembly is pricey.There aren't alot of donor vehicles where I live.

I just removed the regulator assembly and bench tested it.It looks like the gears inside the motor are worn.When ever any strain is placed on the motor the drive gear stops turning,although the motor continues to operate.Now I just need a motor.Are the tailgate motors the same as the window motors in the doors?

I just fixed this exact same issue about a week ago. I took the motor out, could easily open and close the rear window (with no motor). I also verified that with the motor running, I could easily stop it with my thumb.

Got a replacement motor at autozone for ~50 bucks, put some lithium grease on all of the linkage and it works like a charm. Total repair time was less than an hour.

I just replaced the motor on my tailgate with one from a 93 Camry.Took a chance because they looked the same,the only difference was the plug which was an easy fix.20bucks for an NOS Toyota motor in the box,can't complain about that.Done.

I had the same issue w/ my 86 quite some years ago.
I looked in the repair manual and decided to tackle the repair myself.
I found that it was the two brackets that connect the window to the regulator,
They where rusted and in several pieces!
The repair took about an hour to complete and was pretty easy!
Now.... about a week ago the same thing has happened to my 95 so, off to the dealership I go to spend about $40.00 for the parts, and an hour or so on the repair!
by the way.... one really good way too combat this issue, is to run a bead of clear outdoor window silicone along the top edges of both tracks. This will help in keeping water from running in between the window and the two tracks.
also make sure your weather molding is in good shape and runs tight against your rear window!!
