Tailgate lift gas springs

Hey guys! Sorry if this has been discussed but I for the life of me cant find it in search.

I just got a 97 4runner sr5 3.4. Etc etc.

The gas struts that lift the back tailgate hatch have taken their last breath and I need to replace them. I'm sure I could just snag some OEM ones but I kinda wanna get some with some more lifting power. Was gonna order some from Mcmaster or something. Anybody know How many force lbs the stock are when they work (can't just measure mine) or better yet part numbers?

monroe makes decent replacements with a bit more Umph to them. part numbers are in thread.

Definitely go aftermarket. Toyota wanted $125 for EACH.

I did this on my landcruiser but the brand I used were on the stiff side. Would it be better to just buy one to balance out the strength issue.

Thanks much guys! Got some on the way. Maybe I'll try installing just one at first and then the second. I'd much rather have it open every time then not open sometimes. I travel to Colorado a good bit and the cold always seems to effect these things.

I just installed a set of the Monroe Max Lift supports I purchased off of Amazon. Both of mine went bad at the same time and leaked fluid all over my bumper. A lot of people have said that the spring rate is to high and the rear door shoots into your face, practically hitting people in the face.

My personal experience with them is quite the opposite. I am very happy with them and they don't open to fast for my personal taste. You do need to help them out with the last few inches but that seems to be a pretty common thing. I would definitely purchase them again.

Install was very easy as well. Used a board to keep the hatch open and simply removed the c clips on the top and bottom. Removed the pins and installed the new supports. 10 min job.
