Monroe Max Lift Struts for the rear hatch

Hey Everyone,

So I'm looking to replace my struts and went to Pep Boys to see what they have. While not in stock, the guy at the counter said that Monroe has a reasonably-priced set under their "Max Lift" brand. Here's Monroe's website:

Searching for a good price, I found them for $14.57 each with free shipping at Strutmasters:

Monroe Shocks 901446: TOYOTA TRUCK - 4 Runner [1996 - 2002] : MAX-LIFT GAS-CHARGED LIFT SUPPORT

Couldn't find any reviews here...anybody try these out?

Thanks man, it sure does get the job done! Yeah I know im still on my stock struts for the hatch and they still work well, when it is cooler outside they tend to move a little slow or stop a couple inches shy of normal. Are yours blown out or just weak?

They work, but they're losing their strength. If I have the window down, it can barely stay up. It's time.
 
Thanks for postin this. I need new ones for my rear hatch. The hatch hangs real low when the window is down.

Not a bad deal. I only have issues with mine when the temp gets down to -10 or -20, and I am not sure that new struts would help, but for 30 bucks, it can't hurt to try.

Checking your link only to find that the Monroe product is no longer available...any other sources for those hatch struts that you could suggest? Thanks....
 
Just saw this thread for the first time. I put these on a few months ago. Definitely not an OE replacement... These things are way too powerful. If you pop the back hatch, you better be ready to have your hand ready to slow the swing down. Otherwise, the latch will crash hard when it tops out. It is not a smooth slow motion. Just an FYI. It does do the job I guess, but I get frustrated when both hands are full, and I have to open the hatch.
 
nice i was looking into some too cause i know mine get all crazy when its cold too.
kinda suck there that powerful though i can see myself getting hit in the face by my rear hatch lol!
 
Strongarm vs Maxlift

I just put a pair of Strongarm struts on, and they are too week. They are worse than my old OEM ones. I will have to take them out and return them. Anyone knows if the Monroe is a lot stronger? otherwise I might not bother to try.

I just picked up a pair of the Monroe 901446 Max-Lift Hatch Lift Support and they aren't any better than my worn stock ones. They still don't extend the last third of the swing height.

Ecohonda - can you provide a model number of the ones you got?
 
Mine are the 901446's as well. Occasionally, mine will require a little help with the first inch or so, but then they have always been way too strong. They always top completely out for me. If I have the window rolled down into the tailgate, then they are pretty close to be valved correctly. There has got to be a better option between OE and these things... Anybody?

WOW, that's crazy! Perhaps I got a bad set then because even with the window rolled up they won't fully extend the gate without some help. Wanna trade? :D
