Tailgate lock drop

I know this is a common problem, but the tailgate lock cylinder has dropped into the door. Read a bunch of posts about this.

What is the recommended fix, or link to a thread with best resolution, please?

I don't know if you've taken apart your hatch to get to the license plate bezel yet but my suggestions are:

JB WELD the two places where the lock cylinder is secured .. By the two screws..


Or


Go to a junk yard to get a replacement rear license plate bezel and just swap them out...

I will have a mini write up about the rear license plate bezel coming shortly so you can understand more about what's involved in removing it...

Although mine was never broken, I put some JB WELD on that part to avoid its potential to break in the future

I need to take mine apart again and figure out why the key isn't locking the door any more. The plastic trim just pops off the inside of the door, and there are some metal access panels underneath that will give you access.

I took mine all apart this winter, it was easy. Just dont roll the window down until you fix it.

Take the bezel out, look at a diagram before so you know what to leave it place. It was not bad at all, i used some quick epoxy, bc i had a new tube around. $5-7buck.

Also i recently used the key and some wd 40 to get the lock to work again. I was patient and just kept spraying and wiggling. Now i can quickly access my tools when my bike is locked to the rack, or crack the rear window for my dog

Thanks for the reply - you have to pop the plastic from the inside of the door, right?

Also, aren't you NOT supposed to spray liquids into locks though? Every locksmith I've ever met said graphite powder or nothing. Just wondering.

Youre also not supposed to do alot of things. Life is all about risk. Taking into consideration you locksmiths comments...i bet he also recommends having only him replace the lock with a pricey new one. Job security.

I didnt spray water or liquid nails into it. Moisture gets everywhere air can go, so gotta get the water dissolve formula40 out.

Yes, remove the bezel from the inside.

Good points! The locksmith I listened to on that was the one my landlord hired in 1991 to replace the lock I oiled, which eventually gummed up. That $200 lesson has stuck with me forever.

FWIW, I heard that same locksmith became a Toyota repair mechanic and gives advice on forums :zoom:

Thats where admitting to oilling the lock gets you. Landlords will do anything to stick it to a tenant. Honestly i would not have paid. A landlord has a responsibility to get you a door that locks it's not your property. they are required to provide you a lock on the door. Laws typically favor the renter. But often is the guy who doesnt know the law thst gets stuck with the bill.

That being said I have definitely paid my landlord $25 when I locked myself out of my apartment or forget my keys to come over and let me in.

Dive right into that bezel, its one of the first things i did thst gave me the confidence to be pressing my own wheel bearings this afternoon. Its hot so i am watching usa/russia beach vollyball now tho.

Well, it worked just fine before I "serviced" it and it was a Medeco lock, so I didn't want to mess around with it or lie - but on the bright side, I got 100% of my security deposit back when I moved out and that's pretty rare.

This is a picture of where the lock cylinder is secured with two screws in PLASTIC... Brittle plastic... A little metal here and there would go a long way. Wish less plastic was used for areas like these that have repeated pressure over time which is sure to break eventually ...


You can see the ONLY integrated bolt sticking out & the two screw openings to secure the lock cylinder...

I have since tried to strengthen areas like this which will eventually break with JB WELD...

Just a big glob in the open area below....

You can actually see a small crack on one of the screw holes....

Repaired broken screw bosses

I pulled the license plate frame/bezel off today and threw some JB Weld all over the screw bosses that had cracked right off and were still screwed to the lock cylinder.

Once the glue fully cures I'll put the frame back on and see if it lasts another 16 years.

QUESTIONS
1) I found a way to remove the 4 expansion plugs that hold the bezel to the trunk lid without breaking them, but how do you guys do that, or do you just break and replace them?

2) Should I reinforce the lock cylinder somehow to hedge against the plastic breaking again?

3) Lastly, when reinstalling the frame/bezel, should I silicone around the perimeter to create a watertight seal?
