I recently bought my second 4runner because I was in an accident with my old one and the insurance company wrote it off. I'll post some pictures some other time.
I bought the 1990 for $400 and had it running and on the road for well under $1000. It was an SR5 with the 22re and a manual tranny. No other options. It ran great. I did some serious negotiating with the insurance company because the other driver was at fault and I was able to get $3000 for the settlement.
I ended up buying a 1992 3L V6 Automatic that was in good shape except for a pretty rusty tailgate for $2500. It only cost me $40 to certify it and I was on the road.
I knew that the tailgate on my old 4runner was in pretty good shape even thought the window didn't work so I found the scrapyard who bought it and went in to see what they wanted for the tailgate.
The guy claimed that he was looking it up on the computer and he tells me they're worth $800-$1200. I told him that I knew that it didn't work and that it wasn't in mint shape so it wasn't worth that. Then he tells me that for a dented one where the window doesn't work that it's worth $300. I told him that it wasn't worth that much since I can do a body job on the one I have for practically free.
Once the guy realizes that he can't rip me off he actually starts bashing on Toyotas. He tells me that you have to sit with your feet up in the air and that they're not good on gas because his "friend" (I doubt he has many) had one and that his full size chevy got better mileage. 28 MPG according to him. A brand new Chevy is rated on fueleconomy.gov as 14/19MPG. I guess he drives a super-chevy since he thinks he's superman. He also said that he doesn't understand why people like the 22re engine so much because he knew someone who bought one and the engine blew right away.
To top it all off the guy is this skinny little runt with tight jeans and he's obviously got little man syndrom and no joking he was stroking his doberman pincher junk-yard dog while I was talking to him.
I didn't bother telling the guy that I just did a bunch of work on the 22re engine because and I'll never give him a cent of my money.
I just needed to rant about this a bit. It's so ridiculous that it's funny and at the same time maddening.
