Tailgate will not open

Mark86 thank you so much for this solution!!

I just installed a backup camera on my 06 V8. I unplugged the harness connecting the ecu to the latch motor. When I reconnected the latch would not work properly. It would manually latch w/ a loose fit. Opening required doing it manually.

I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes , reconnected & the latch works perfectly.
 
I just bought my first 4Runner (2000) the other day and mine didn't work either. I will be trying this fix as well. Juuuuust after I fix the rotted rusty frame.

You didn't indicate how long you left your battery disconnected I would try disconnecting the battery for at least 5 to 10 minutes and then retrying the tailgate again other than that I have no further recommendations

I'm new here, and hoping to make a positive impact at some point, but for now, I just want to thank everyone who posts resolutions. I installed a rear view camera and my tailgate wouldn't work after. Disconnected the battery, waited 5 minutes, problem solved! Thanks everyone!
 
My tailgate just stopped working for no reason on my 2004 4Runner and because of this forum it is now fixed with out going to the dealer. I just disconnected the battery for 5 minutes and now it’s working! I never comment on forums but that just saved me tons of time and money. Thanks!

Thanks everybody for the post and fixes. I had the same issue and disconnecting the battery did the trick!

It worked for me on my ‘06 2WD Ltd... ...for about two weeks.

I’ve tried cycling the locks 3 times locked/unlocked by both the driver’s door and the hatch lock numerous times today; window up and down. Do I HAFTA disconnect my battery again?!

Toyotas - I own 4 of ‘em! Recently, for a few days, could honestly say FIVE including TWO Highlanders. Great vehicles. Some really strange solutions...

To whom it may concern,

Disconnecting the battery did I the trick... ...for now. I made sure it wasn’t a one-time thing by opening the hatch 3 X.

Hey everyone sorry for bringing up a dead thread but I’m having the same issue I’m pretty sure. When I did my review camera My door locks wont working unless I normalized them but the second that I turn off the car I have to do it all over again also My Rear hatch windshield wiper does not work along with my key fob I can’t lock or unlock any of the doors and I can get it to normalize to open the doors And turn off the car they go back to not working I can do the three unlocks and get my rear hatch to open but that’s it any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having this same issue. It's a little more specific though so hopefully these details can be enough for someone to help me know where to look next.

I disconnected the battery, reconnected and normalized window/rear window/locks/moonroof. Then, I went to open the tailgate and it worked! But after it was open the motor made a little extra sound, and once I closed it, it made another little extra sound, and won't open again.

I recreated this exact same sequence a 2nd time. Got it to open once, but once it closes it's closed again for good unless I disconnect the battery again. Any tips...? :(

Sorry for quoting myself to necro this thread but was hoping anyone would have a pointed suggestion of where to start here.
 
This thread really saved me! I was in the middle of doing deliveries and went to unload and the rear door wouldn't open. Thankfully I could still roll the window down until I had time to search online. This forum has helped me out a few times since I bought my 2004 4Runner a year ago. I simply unhooked the battery for about 20 minutes while I was doing something else and when I hooked it back up I was able to open it without doing anything else. Tested it out by opening and closing it several times to make sure. Don't forget these doors are a soft close, don't slam them shut!
