Yea. It was a theory, they are. They moved to the much more common and reliable method. The tailgate was nice, I admit, but I owned a 1st and 2 2nd gen 4runners and each developed rear window issues. The "roughness" of that design, treating it like a tailgate, beats the crap out of the window component.
It was a trade off. In moving the design, the added longevity to the rear window.
Gotta have give and take in mechanical design.
