Tailgate

1st2ndGen

What I love the most about the second gen is that it has a tailgate. Is the tailgate able to be an option on any other generation(besides first) and if not why the hell did they get rid of it. I have hauled lumber in my 2nd gen with the tailgate dropped.

They ditched it after 2nd gen. Unnecessary addition that was supposedly prone to failure. I love my tailgate on my 1st gen. After all, a 1st gen is just a pickup with a few things tacked on.

Yea. It was a theory, they are. They moved to the much more common and reliable method. The tailgate was nice, I admit, but I owned a 1st and 2 2nd gen 4runners and each developed rear window issues. The "roughness" of that design, treating it like a tailgate, beats the crap out of the window component.

It was a trade off. In moving the design, the added longevity to the rear window.

Gotta have give and take in mechanical design.

my 2nd gen has 235,500 miles on it been rear ended and had to open the panel in the tailgate and push out metal so window would roll down. havent had any problems with it. Like any motorized window they are prone to more failure than not having one. For me personally I wish they would offer the tailgate as an option since it is one of the features I like the most. Also have one on my 98 tahoe and that is much better than the barn door styling that they went to. And no i am not just looking around the room and saying i love whatever i see.
