Takata Airbag Recall

The Takata airbag recall is going to be the largest recall campaign in the history of the auto industry. From Forbes:

"On May 4, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration dramatically expanded its recall of Takata-made inflators, adding as many as 40 million airbags to the 29 million that had already been recalled. The safety campaign is so massive that NHTSA had to prescribe a multi-year, multi-phased approach to try to get them all repaired by 2019.

Friday’s announcement by eight automakers is merely the first tranche of the first phase of that expanded recall. Another wave of affected vehicles will be announced next week. A total of 17 manufacturers are affected."

Our 4Runners are just a sliver of the total number of automobiles impacted. Your other car is likely to also receive a recall notice.

I too do not see the 4Runner on this list. I do however own a 2013 Acura TL 3.5L and it has been recalled. I called Acura today and they want me to come down and take a complimentary rental car paid for by Honda until this is resolved sometime this summer.

My 2005 DODGE has a takata air bag but my Honda does not. Been getting voicemails and postcards for years. Finally broke down last week and had it fixed.

And I live in da South. Hot and Humid.

Interesting, I wonder if that means that only US models are affected or Toyota Canada think that Canadians strong enough to not to be affected by metal objects flying through airbag...

It's because the cause of the issue is high humidity environments. Places like Canada and the northern parts of the United States are less likely to be affected. Here in Minnesota we have a harder time getting the parts because there is a lower chance of an actual issue occurring upon airbag deployment. The more humid the area that you live in and the longer it is humid during the year the more likely you are to have an issue.

It appears that even the new 4Runners may end up on the recall list. Just an FYI as mine wasn't on the list at the time until it was recently updated.

WTF, when I bought my 2016 I assumed that since they knew about the problem before mine was assembled of course it wouldn't be an issue

MSN poster many new vehicles are still being built and sold with questionable air bags. This recall will go on and on.

From what I can tell from talking to a buddy that had his honda's bag replaced. They put the same inflators back in the car and in 5-6 years it will need to be recalled again. That's why the newer ones aren't on the list, they will get added as they age past the 5-6 year degradation window for the inflators.

If you read the FAQs (linked below) you will see that the problem exists because the bad bags lack a desiccant to prevent moisture degradation. BUT it is still not clear if a bag with desiccant just has a longer life or is never a problem.

Also you will see that some 2015 and 2016 4Runners will eventually be included and it states the phase out of the bad bags in new production 4Runners won't happen until 2017. So it looks like 2017 and maybe even early 2018 4Runners could be affected.

My guess is those new 4Runners with bad bags are likely to be sent North; at least that would make common sense, as it would give more time for correction before lack of desiccant degradation.

Takata is looking to go into bankruptcy. looking for another company to buy them . this is so they will not have to fix the problem.

then how will these be replaced ? who will pay for all this work ?

Read this development with interest (as I just bought a used 2011 Limited last week) - contacted Toyota Canada, and currently there are no immediate plans to issue a recall of 2010-2011 4Runners for this issue up here.

Update to my previous post:

Although I received my Safety Recall Campaign notice from Toyota Canada back in February (2019), I waited for a convenient time for me to bring my 2011 Limited into my local dealership for the airbag replacement. I also figured not going in early would reduce the "guinea pig" or "lab rat" effect that might happen with the first few removal/replacement procedures at my dealership.

I was also a little wary of getting this recall done, having read the many posts about some sloppy workmanship being done at isolated (mainly U.S.) dealerships.

The last recall notice that I received was for my 2003 Limited (the infamous "shave-the-brake-pedal" driver's floor mat fiasco), which I declined.

I had called last week to make an appointment for the recall work, and this morning the work was completed. Before handing over my 4Runner, I chatted briefly with the technician who was doing the work to confirm what he was going to be removing to get to the airbag assembly. The glovebox, the dashboard gets moved slightly, and the radio/stereo gets loosened to get at the airbag.

Total actual time was a shade over 2 hours (just a shade!) between drop-off for appointment and call back saying work was completed. Invoice has 3 hours recorded.

An inspection of the dashboard/glovebox area afterwards, and I can't even tell work has been done in the area. No scratches, no rattles, everything lines up as before.

All in all, very pleased by this recall work done at North Bay Toyota.

I just checked my relatively new to me 2003 Limited. No Takata recall in mine.
