So I found a 2016 Runner SR5, 4wd, 49,000 miles for $26,900

don't like that it's black but that's not a game changer really. it has the cloth interior which is meh also - prefer leather
I have a car to trade.

Question being - is this a good price for a 2 year old with the miles? I don't know much about this year of Runner.
I might as well make payments on something fun.

And NO I AM NOT getting rid of my 99...maybe I'll get buried in it.

Not bad. My sis has a 2013 and it isn't as good as those built 2014+ IMHO. Looks nice.

If anything this transmission will be better to tow the Airstream than the 99.

Post on the 5th gen board also, those guys should be able to tell you what to look for if you are seriously considering it.

I like to use Edmunds for trade in, person to person and retail values. I get 24600, 26700 and 28400 respectively. Personally I never pay retail or even person to person, I aim for trade-in pricing yet something between trade-in and PTP is tolerable depending on color, model and features. I've learned if it doesn't have Everything you want then don't buy it unless you plan on reselling soon. I'd say keep looking till you find the color, leather and model you Really want. I need to go drive them to figure out the differences. In the long run I still only plan on dragging a camper and not getting stuck in the snow.

i have a 2wd 3rd gen and it's completely paid off.

not sure what to do. I never really go overlanding, but i think 4x4 would be nice in case if i ever wanted to get off the pavement.

The 4x4 is nice even to go back on a dirt/sand road there in TX. I need it for the stupid snow up here. Keep the 3Gen and get the other to play with.

I have no need really for another vehicle (I have 2 already) but a newer truck/car may make me want trade up.

Do you really want another 4runner? Since you have a 3rd gen why not go to a Landcruiser? For that price I saw a 200 series (2008) with 140K miles (Austin TX). Landcruiser is a tank and so smooth in every way. It also retain the valve for years. My 2000 landcruiser (100 series) with V8 gets 16.6 MPG on cruise at 70 MPH and my 3rd gen runner is doing 17.7 MPG cruise at 68 MPH. Drive a Landcruiser and feel it before you go with the 4runner.

Hopefully your mom gives you a better deal than that. From what I've seen in my area, 25k is on the high end for 90k miles on a 5th gen.

Sounds like you're not that into it.

I don't like black either. It's impossible to keep looking clean, and shows every little scratch. Plus, IMO 5th gens just don't look that good in black. I really like them in white or the dark grey. For me, black is a deal breaker.

Edit: Removed the comment about TX heat, I had read your username wrong and thought you were from there, haha.

Also, if you don't like cloth, hold out for one that has the interior you want. You want a "Premium" edition, btw.

I researched a 5th gen too.

Models are SR5, TRD Offroad (SR5), Limited, and TRD PRO.

Forget about the Pro, as good luck finding one used for much under 40k.

SR5 and TRD OR are available in two trims, standard and "Premium". Premium comes with (fake) leather, heated seats, sunroof, and a few other things. Seriously, it's not real leather, it's called "softex" or something like that.

On that, buying a new vehicle for 35k+ that doesn't have heated seats is insane to me.

PRO comes standard with all the premium features, I believe.

I had found a '15 SR5 Premium with 35k miles at a local BMW dealer for 26,999, which the 5th gen guys told me was a great deal.

Personally, considering what you get for the money on the standard SR5, pricing on these is nuts. Which is why I decided to get a 3rd gen as well.

Also, research this on your own, but I also ran into a lot of complaints about the 4.0/5A drivetrain combo in those. Weird shifting and sluggish performance were the main complaints.

Anyway, if you're going to pay near 27k for a vehicle, make DAMN sure it's exactly what you want. Toyota sells about 100k 5th gens a year, they're will be others.

Cannot figure out this faint beeping noise

I am new to this site and am not sure I am posting in the right place but I have a problem with my 2010 4Runner Limited. The maintenance required light came on yesterday and while driving I started to hear a very faint but steady ringing type noise. It lasts for like 10 seconds and then goes away. At first I thought it happened from hitting a bump in the road but since yesterday it has happened several times and I cannot figure out what it is or what is causing it. Anyone have this happen to them? It is so faint and never lasts more than a few seconds before it shuts off. Sometimes it happens more frequently than other times but this has come out of nowhere? Please help!

I laugh when I read the 5th gen guys post this, as I think this is pretty well overblown. My father has a 2016 that sits next to mine in the garage, and I have zero issues with the power/acceleration even when it's loaded up with the family, dog, and luggage. Could it use some more power? SURE! But is it sluggish? Nah... It is quite a bit faster off the line than the 3rd gen, that's for damn sure.

The biggest difference between the 3rd and 5th gen is the massive increase in interior space. You truly feel like you're driving a much bigger vehicle even though, side by side, don't have TOO big of a difference in exterior dimensions.

5th gen will be quieter, have more gizmos, and will probably get slightly better gas mileage (although not by much).

If you're buying a 5th gen for better towing capacity, I'm not sure you're gaining much in that department... Both are rated for 5k max.

As stated, the 80 series (97 model) got head gasket issues and bad gas mileage.

My .02 ( since you asked, LOL) If you're not happy about the color, don't buy it. The only way to change it after you buy it is to sell it. Cloth vs leather- personal preference, I prefer cloth, I don't stick to it when it gets hot outside and the cloth never feels as cold as leather in the winter. My brother has leather in his minivan, it's proven to be much more kid and pet proof. His dog nearly destroyed the cloth interior when he had his '10 4runner.

You are so right about the last part. I'm driving a Sonata also and no leather and it drives me NUTS!! And I owe on it. Maybe that's why I want to get another Runner.
Just sit tight and wait for the one I really want to cross my path. It will eventually just like my 3rd Gen did. Gotta have leather in it but they do make some nice reskins for the seats.
I found a white one with dark toffee colored leather seats and it is beautiful combo. I may go look.

This whole being patient stuff is a tough. Does not play well with my ADHD! LOL:hippie:

I don't know, I haven't driven one yet myself. I'm just reporting the info that I found.

Anyway, may fav thing about the 5th gen is what you mentioned, the interior space. For what I want a vehicle for, that is a big plus. I watched a video review that said it had quite a bit more space than a Grand Cherokee, like 20 cubic ft I think. The relatively tall roof and square shape must really help with that.

For towing, one may want to look elsewhere. The Taco with the 3.5 is rated at 6,500lbs, IIRC. That may be a bit better. Then of course there is the Tundra or Sequoia, I don't know the figures offhand, but being as those are larger, V8 powered vehicles I imagine they're at 7k lbs plus.

Sometimes during my current search for a 3rd gen, I wonder if I might be better off with a first gen Sequoia.

And honestly, the 5th gen T4R doesn't have that many gizmos that aren't on the 3rd gen. It's one of the most basic 4x4's you can get in the US, next to the base Wrangler with crank windows.

You get the infotainment and backup cam, which I've found can be added to a 3rd gen for not that much $$. 5th gen lacks most newer features such as pushbutton start, smart or proximity key, rear cross traffic warning, blind spot monitoring. Which is all stuff that came on my GF's new 20k Hyundai, btw.

Also, you have to buy the Limited to get AWD, and you need to buy at least the Premium to get heated seats.

I also find it interesting that a multi-mode equipped 3rd gen has a more versatile 4wd system than the 5th gen. (or even the 01-02 center diff lock button, for that matter)
