I can say that I don't fully support every single NRA position, but they still serve a purpose as the most powerful pro-2A organization in the country.
Unfortunately we get into the predicament of electing leaders, where people are forced to pick the lesser evil instead of a candidate instead of finding one that agrees with their every position. It's just part of the challenge of having one person representing millions. But then these "leaders" become empowered with the ability to change our laws and interpret our constitutional rights and you need massive organizations with deep pockets, like the NRA, to hit the brakes on things. Guns aren't the only industry with this kind of backing, but more prominent lately as it seems we continually get tested when under Democratic presidency or governmental majority.
With all that said, I'm glad to see there are other groups showing they don't have to fit into the typical party stereotypes and I hope to see it on both sides on various issues.
I really wish we would move toward a popular vote on certain things, especially legislation that defies the essence of "We the People".

I have never been a member of the NRA or any other gun rights club. I fully support gun rights but I don't think any association is needed to back it up. Free and armed americans can do that just fine. There is a prime example of this right now in Connecticut with most people refusing to register their "assault rifles".

Their reach extends in kind with proposed legislation. When doctor's are asking you about firearms in the home to qualify you for care, when campaigns are equally financed by anti-2A groups, and when credit cards decide to modify the terms of their agreements to exclude certain legal purchases, it becomes a 2A issue. If not the NRA, who else is big enough and willing to go to bat on these issues?

I'm not so sure... politicians continue to make them relevant. If there wasn't a pressing need, the NRA wouldn't be so well funded and in the spotlight every month. Again, I'm not supporting their every position but I wonder what would happen in the absence of their presence.
Same thing that would happen in the absence of any major power. A country that is truly free. I'm not saying that we don't need a government but with any major power comes major corruption and control. I think the NRA is just another corporation that is making money by the millions/billions funded by 2A supporters that THINK that they are getting something good.
This goes back to what I have said dozens of times before. We don't need any huge voice to speak for us. We as americans need to stand up for ourselves both individually and as a group. We don't need any multi million dollar organization to deliver our message.

Yes but the problem is individual Americans can only stand up for themselves politically every 4 years. You get some knuckleheads in the majority and legislation is passed before you have a chance to act. Look at CO now... it's illegal to buy a 30 round mag, which is something we won't have a chance to even begin to rectify until later this year. You need well-funded, vocal, up front opposition. I'd happily support a different organization that did this, but in our political atmosphere money talks. I don't see any way around that in current times.
I agree in the political sense. But how many people are still buying 16+ round mags from out of state? I would be willing to bet that the only real big affect of the mag ban is that there are a certain number of pistols that aren't sold in CO anymore due to the gun stores not legally selling mags with them.
I still get my 16+ round mags. I'm not going to openly say how I get them but I will say that any of the laws that are passed here simply cannot be enforced aside from the carrying on college campus.
I do hope that these bs laws in CO are removed though. There is a lot of talk about that but I won't get my hopes up.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but look what it did to you... it took an otherwise law-abiding citizen and made you a criminal. That's right - you are considered a criminal now under existing state law.
Most laws cannot be actively and pre-emptively enforced. The laws exist as a way to establish repercussions once a crime is committed, which is why so many of us believe in the right to defend ourselves with deadly force. Sure, they can try, but that's the meat of the pro-2A argument. Criminals don't obey laws in the first place, and now that you are one you further prove that point I guess.
But I'm a smooooth criminal!

I don't agree with all the NRA's political views, but they're the ONLY powerful and well-funded gun lobby. Politicians are bottom feeding scum and will only respond to losing their money or losing their jobs, and only the NRA has been able to accomplish that (see Colorado's recalls).
I wasn't big on being a member until Barry and Friends started their anti-EBR campaign after Newton (essentially demonizing law-abiding citizens). After that I got really pissed off and
a) purchased a lifetime membership
b) give regularly to NRA-ILA
c) vote straight ticket Republican
d) buy guns when they're cheap even if I don't "need" them, because in this great blue country of ours laws are passed without the approval of the public, and once gun laws are passed they are NEVER repealed
