Talk me out of a Land Cruiser

The FZJ 80s are slow, heavy, last of the solid axle rigs, but have the torgue to do anything. They both have almost 200k miles and run like new. My wife loves hers and I feel safer with her driving it because they are built like tanks.

I am contemplating upgrading her to a 100 or 200 series sometime soon.

If you're looking for a Landcruiser forum go to IH8MUD. Best forum around for Landcruisers.

I love the 4Runners but if I had to choose..... The Landcruiser would be my choice.

The saying goes..... If Chuck Norris drove a Landcruiser, he would be a completely unstoppable force......

My vote.... LANDCRUISER.

Instead of the 100 or 200, just do the LS swap! It's what I'm going to do to my 80 at some point. Then, your problem is solved!

Weird... I don't see a lot of heavily modded LC200's out there. I bet they look monstrously good with full metal bumpers and such all kitted up. I wouldn't mind a LC200, but I just don't want to spend the ridiculous amount of money for the only "Luxury Mall Crawler" package that is offered for them. Same reason I decided against a GX470 or GX460, I just didn't feel it was worth it to spend a premium on a vehicle that I was going to have to gut all the useless luxury crap that added 50% to the sticker price in the first place. :(

Man I wish I could get a nice simple LC200 with either the 3UR-FE or 1VD-FTV w/ dual turbos, manual all-time 4WD transfercase with Torsen T3, and cloth seats with minimal ritz (though I still want that *****in' center console cooler!), I'd drop 50 grand for that LC200 to modify.

I've seen these guys bring in some nice Landcruiser before

Am I the only one the cares about weight. These 200 series start at ~6k pounds. Fully armored and loaded they are over 8k pounds. Has anyone tried to really offroad a vehicle at that type of weight and seen what it does? I suspect it is not pretty or graceful. It can get the job done, but not my preference....

Now, I would happily take an 80 series with an ls1 swap. That is a dream rig for overland adventure. And most likely what I will be building at some point.

If you think the power in your 5th gen is weak, don't get an 80 series..... LOL Toyota has never been famed for their power output....

Eh. Every generation of land cruiser is stronger than the previous. I've seen plenty of 200 series off road. Pretty sure someone has driven one on the rubicon.

I've always liked Land Cruisers. I'm still very early in my time with my '15 Trail, and love most things about it. The one thing that keeps eating me is I'm missing the v8 from my GX. I miss the torque and the noise. I'm frustrated by how "flat" the 4runner's v6 is between 2 and 4k -- the meat of the range.

Otherwise, though, the 4r is great.

Used LC200s aren't much more than what my '15 is worth. Maybe trade +10.

Pros of the LC:
- beefier build quality
- v8 -- big v8

cons:
- 3rd row is in the way and hard to remove
- gas mileage
- very little community support compared to 4r.

Thoughts?

The lack of community shouldn't be a selling point. Because you're going to get an immense amount of love from any Toyota enthusiast. If someone gives you some hate because of your powerful, luxury class, master-race SUV of SUV's. It'll be obvious that they're jealous of the vehicle.

I'm actually considering one myself, that or a Lexus LX 570, just because the comfort. I'm never going to go off-road or rock crawling/water fording. Though should I ever find myself in that situation, I'm confident that my Limited 4Runner will get me across any challenging situation.

I'd say buy it. Upgrade your life!

I can't talk you out of a Landcruiser. I have 4 of them and it's my favorite vehicle of anything on the road.

Those early ones were nice rigs. The first brand new vehicle I ever bought was a LC. Paid $4300 for it brand new! Of course the year was 1974. Loved that rig tho.

I understand. I sold my 13' trail to my father when he moved to baja and almost bought a 15' sr5 to replace it but just couldn't do it. I loved the 4runner and it did everything I asked, but I kept found myself justifying it for some reason. Sounds crazy I know, but I just had trouble developing a relationship with it. Ended up getting a 97 fzj80 and love it. Will be my dedicated trail rig for now and hopefully something new will come on the horizon in a few years that will be more of a daily driver/extended trip type truck as the fzj is older. New cruiser, 4runner, defender, wrangler, potential ford bronco all on the table in a few years here. I'm REALLY hoping toyota smartens up and brings something in to challenge the jeep unlimiteds cough* Land Cruiser GX model*cough.. it's essentially a "trail edition" land cruiser that sells for around 55k usd equivalent in Australia. Absurd we don't get that here.

Either way, go with your heart. Check out this thread at mud for some inspiration. Can't go wrong either way. 200 series picture thread | Page 124 | IH8MUD Forum

DirtRoadTrip has an interesting article; the author went from an LC to a 4R. I'm pretty sure he's a member here.

Moving on From the Land Cruiser DirtRoadTrip

I am like everyone else in this thread; love the LCs, had two myself. In the end, getting a new, warrantied, capable truck for 1/2 of what a new LC cost, or a 5 year old, 70k miles one would cost, was the deciding factor for me. When i was looking for my 4R, I found on autotrader a CA 2008 LC, gold, with ARB front and rear bumpers, sliders, lift, and larger tires for $40k. It had 80k on the clock i think. I got my 4r for the same amount.

I'll freely admit i troll the internet or ebay monthly for used 200s ;)

I love the 4R as long as I don't drive the 100.

There is no comparison. But the 200s are ugly, IMO. Why wouldn't you get a low mileage 100 from the South or California?

My love for it has gotten to the point where I can rattle off every 100 within 100 miles: their mileage, colors, and whether they have AHC. I would drive ours more often if I didn't get shit from my husband every time I did.

If a clean white one came up for sale, say a 2006, within an hour's drive, the 4R would be history, much as I love it.

If it had 100k miles when I bought it, I figure I could do another 150 or so. Those numbers are common for guys on Mud.

Really, are you comparing a 200 series to earlier LCs in terms of off-road capability. For real? Do you also believe every bit of marketing BS you read. I'm pretty sure I could do a side by side real world scenario and quickly convince you otherwise.

I'm sure the 200 is fantastic on the road....

I don't think Toyota even considers the LC 200 a hard core offroad vehicle in the NA market. Pretty sure they stopped offering a locker about 15 years ago. I think early 100s offered a rear locker, but the later models did not have one.

It's a nice well built luxury SUV. I know people who paid big $s for them want to think they will go anywhere... unfortunately that is not really the case. I'm sure they can be modified to be decent... but really not an ideal base to start from IMHO. I still think they are cool, but.... just not much value on the newer ones.

I guess ignorance is bless In your case. Maybe you should go onto mud. Go into the 200 series forum and read a bit ;). Maybe you should research a little before getting your panties into a bunch. Maybe you should talk with Scott on expedition portal. He will straighten you out.

Oh boy I can't wait to be straightened out.. LOL

I'm sure they have some redeeming qualities... but not my choice. Like I said, Love the older ones and plan on an 80 series build at some point. New ones are just not my style. I see very little value for the money.

OP wanted to be talked out of or into one... I'm stating my opinion and sticking with it until I see some facts (like numbers or features)...

OP here. I happened to put about 300 miles on my 4r today, in some really crappy weather. Had a lot of time to think about the 4r/LC.

There's one available nearby, and I should probably go drive it either way. But, the 4r has these things going for it:
- Very comfortable on the freeway, cruises all day at 70-80 and returns 20mpg. Cruises better than my old GX470, as long as you don't need to pass on a 2 land road :)
- 1000lbs lighter than the LC. That's a ton of mass to suspend, brake, etc. I'm sure that's one of the reasons the parts on the LC need to be beefier.
- 4r has more cargo space, and I just hate the fact that the 3rd row isn't removable (easily) in the LC. you can technically remove it, but you've still got seatbelts and other crap back there. Tons of space in the 4r.
- The 4r is the perfect size for me. The LC is only 3" longer and 1.5" wider, but that's probably going to be noticeable.
- I like that the 4r isn't typically driven around my town by soccer moms (no offense, I'm a soccer dad). And, I saw one on the freeway today just like mine and I think they are better looking than the LC200. The LC200 is like a marshmallow.
- And, it's still basically new (10k miles), and I own it. A 2011-2013 LC would be a bit of a gamble, *and* more $$.

Will probably go drive it just to be sure, but today's trip made me love the 4r a bit more...
