Talk me out of it, thinking of selling getting Sequoia

Here's our 2005, sold it last Oct. 4x4 with 2 inch lift

LOVED it......plenty of power and room for the wife and boys. Many trips to the Eastern Sierras and back to Texas.

But I did miss having a 4Runner and really liked the 5th Gen Limited (with 3rd row)

Now my wife loves the 4Runner, but the first thing she said was "it's not a roomy as the Sequoia".........

As a previous poster said, the Sequoia is made here in US, not Japan like the 4Runner, and another factor, when we looked for the Seq-Platinum it was $11-15k more than a LE 4Runner. I couldn't justify the difference, but I do like the white one from Stom M3, that's similar to what I would set up.

Seriously... if you tow heavy loads > 5000-lbs, or if you need real 4x4 off road capability, then sure get the Sequoia.

But if it's a town vehicle where your worst roads are graded gravel and you won't be towing anything heavier than what your 4Runner will handle you're throwing money away if you get a Sequoia. A Sienna will do a much better job suiting your needs, and it has the same tow capacity as the 4Runner.

My wife occasionally makes noises about getting a larger vehicle as our GSP pup gets bigger (currently 7 months and 60lbs+), but her noises sound like "Tahoe" or "Suburban" or "Sequoia". I refuse to spend $$$$$ on an ocean-liner-length gas-guzzling behemoth when a mini-van would do a much better job of meeting our needs at significantly less cost (both purchase price and fuel). I've driven both minivans and large SUV's (Tahoe and Suburban, both 4x4) long distances for work. I'd rather drive a minivan any day.

Sequoias are a beast! MPG would be a factor, and it may not fit in the garage. I guess it depends on what you would use it for...

I have both a 5.7 v8 Sequoia and a v6 T4R and the Sequoia gets better gas mileage. Granted my Sequoia doesn't have a lift and 35" tires... I prefer my T4R over the Sequoia, and have mine up for sale. The Sequoia IS HUGE. Everyone runs into it while its parked in parking lots. I have dents and dings everywhere because of that. I can't wait until the beast is SOLD.

Other than that- if you are into bling bling and being all pompous, the SEQUOIA is for you. LOL.

If I needed the room for children/people I'd get the Seqouia. My son has one and they love it.He has three kids. Just me and my wife now so don't need something that big.

The Sequoia is awesome, I mean it's a Tundra so it has to be. The only thing I do not like about it is the independent rear suspension.

I went from a Sequoia to a 4Runner, and I don't miss that Sequoia at all. Put a Gobi on it, and I have no problem with the downsize.

Now that is nice. They should have kept the Sequoia that size instead of blowing it up to look like an elephant.
I had my 3rd Gen (1997) 4Runner for 16 years because I did not like the 4th gen and wanted something bigger. So I waited and then in 2008 they decide to change the size. Way to big. So I was happy when the 5th Gen T4R came out as it met all my needs size wise.

After seeing everyones opinion on the Sequoia, I've now decided that I definitely won't be getting one for wifey for the following reasons:

1) Built in USA vs. Japan so therefore it's not as dependable
2) It's so big that it cannot be safely parked anywhere w/o getting hit or maneuvered safely on city streets.
3) Gets crappy MPG's
4) It's too flashy
5) If you're not planning on pulling anything the size of the Queen Mary, getting a vehicle w/ the above mentioned cons is not justifiable.

Probably a wise move. If comfort and cargo area are your main problems, outside of a large van, a Suburban is the only option in my opinion. Third rows still suck in Sequoia/Tahoe sized vehicles. Just my opinion.

Get a Land Cruiser. Made in Japan, and even though the Sequoia has the 5.7, the engine are different. They take a big depreciation hit compared to other Toyotas off the lot, so getting one slightly used will be price similar to a new Sequoia. I was looking at Sequoias until I saw what I could get a used LC for. Only problem with the LC is now my wife wants one too.

Or look at the GX 460. A luxury 4runner with a v8.

I have a 2004 Sienna, a 2011 Sequoia 4WD, and a 2016 4Runner 4WD. I purchased them new. All are stock. Here is my experience with them.

Sienna XLE:
Great for roadtrips. It is the most comfortable of the three. Third row is comfortable. I really have no complaints.
Also a great commuter because I get 24mpg with it.

Issues: had to replace wheel bearings at 190k miles
Has 205k miles on it now.

Sequoia SR5:
Great for towing. I tow a couple dirt bikes with it and I can't even feel that there's a trailer behind me. Comfort is ok but the ride is really harsh. Very hard to park. Also it is too large for tight trails. Very powerful. And the 3rd row is quite roomy. I get 15mpg. If you want to get a sequoia, I would wait until the next one comes out because they have been making the same one since the 2008 model year.

Issues: VVT-i sensor seal started leaking at 80k miles. Easy to replace.
Washer fluid pump stopped working at 89k miles. Also easy to replace.
Has 94k miles on it now. Goes through tires pretty fast (Michelin LTX).

4Runner SR5:
Good for 2 person road trips. Much more comfortable than the Sequoia. Towing is ok but the Sequoia is better at it because of the long wheelbase and V8. Handling is better than the sequoia. And so is overall build quality and feel. Motor feels like the perfect fit for the 4Runner. I think its the perfect amount of power. The sequoia feels like it has too much power at times. 2nd row is good but the third row is useless. I get 19-20mpg with this.

Issues: None yet
