TBU Question

Will the stock 4runner 3 spoke wheels work with the tundra brake upgrade?

Nope!

There's a list on that big huge TBU thread on the front page that shows which do fit.

You have 2 alternatives, grind down the inside of the rim taking off the high points (I did that at first before my rims started pitting on the outside) or putting on other rims.

The most common rims you can get that work and won't break the bank are the 5-spoke star wheels from 99-02 4Runners or Tacoma TRD wheels, which is what I have on there now since I got a set for basically free.

My calipers have the high spot ground down to clear the wheels without anything needing to be done to the wheel itself.

Edit: somewhere on here I posted a picture of the 3spoke wheels on in a position to show where to grind the tundra caliper to clear them.

There are two types of calipers that may be used for the TBU mod. The smaller 199mm caliper and the bigger 231 caliper.

The 199mm caliper may be used on the stock 3-spoke wheel without any grinding.

To fit the 231mm caliper requires that you grind out a portion of the inside of those wheels.

Yeah that's true, but not everyone like the look of spacers. I suppose if you are looking to add some anyway now's a good time.

I run 1.5" with my 285's almost no rub and since I have them anyway this upgrade is in the near future.
Plus I like the look of wheels matching the same width as the flares.

Lifted trucks with tiny tires that are 2-3" inboard of the flares looks stupid to me.

I never thought about the flares. I have the small SR5 flares, so looks fine to me on mine. Now that I think about it, that's why some of the newer cheapo Jeeps look funny, it's like the tires and sunk in or something.

Here is where you would grind a slant onto the raised portion of the bigger calipers.
