TE lemon?

Now that the snow is flying and roads are all wet I've noticed the front brakes squeaking loud on a TE with ~ 4,000 miles. This isn't the squeak inside the cabin from the brake pedal like others have complained about, this is definetally from the calipers and only squeaks and squeals when brakes are applied. This has led me to take a quick look at the rotors thru the rims. I noticed speckled surface rust on the front/outer/driver side rotor that easily rubs off with my finger, leading me to believe the brake pad is not making contact with the rotor at all on the outer side making that brake VERY ineffective. Probably just a stuck piston in the caliper. I didn't crawl under to check if that inner side of the rotor is contacting the pad because Im a little lazy and didn't pay $35K+ to roll on the ground under the truck. It's going back to the dealer tomorrow so they can check it out. This problem must not be common or there would have been other threads about it. I hope I did not get a lemon.

If you take it three times to be fixed and they can't or don't ..then I think it might be warranted .

Yea me too, I also hope the fix will fix the brake squealing, I may only find out after the long weekend.

Yea "lemon" may be a harsh word off the bat but this is the first truck I have to take in for work to be done under warranty. I'm a pretty die hard TOY fan and have confidence the problem will be fixed ASAP. I just hope this isn't the start of many more problems to come.

This is my first Toyota. 10k miles so far. Zero defects so far. My 07 VW was in the shop over 10 times in 3 years and 58k miles for failed AC compressor, O2 sensor, cruise control, AC again, and paint coming off the factory aero kit. Yeah, Lemon for a brake squeak is a little harsh. :cheers:

Nothing like going to the enth degree, and then backing off. I don't really think its appropriate to leave the title like that either. The last thing Toyota needs is one guy saying "LEMON, LEMON! My brakes aren't working" and some idiot media writer getting word of that.

A real die hard TOY fan would have thought of that.

I think I know what you're talking about. My brakes have squeaked for as long as I can remember. I don't mean that they squeak every time I step on the brakes, but when the temperature drops to about 35F or lower and my 4r has been sitting overnight, they squeal loudly on the first two or three stops when I get <10 mph. I had the dealer look at it on the first oil change and they said they couldn't replicate (which doesn't surprise me since it goes away after about the second or third stop) and didn't notice anything wrong with the brakes. The temperature here has begun to drop and I'm still experiencing the squeal. Keep me updated.

There is a question mark after the title TE lemon it looks like this ?. Meaning, what do you think? All manufacturers are prone to make one occasionally. If I purchased one that's too bad, I hope I didn't. Nice to see those uptight people getting uptight, keep 'em coming.lol.

My 4th Gen did that as well. The weather is starting to drop here in Texas (well, thats subjective. If you don't like Texas weather, wait 5 minutes) anyway, I haven't noticed any squeeling on my 5th gen. I JUST hit 10k miles yesterday. I'll update if the colder weather causes mine to squeel but at the moment, all is good.

I am interested in the findings. Harper7 had suggested the possibility of the vibration/shimmy issues that some of us experience may be related to the brakes. Not because there is an "issue" with the brakes but simply because it is a part that is in constant rotation and is effected by speed. You dont happen to have that issue by chance do you? Just trying to find similarities.

Well I have 12,000 miles and counting, and no squeaks. The temps I have driven in were about 30 degrees in summer and as of this week about -27 and snow. Compared to my Jeep Grand Cherokee the 4 runner is a breath of fresh air.
