I recently was shopping for a good OBD2 Scan tool and at the dealer we always used Tech stream which was basically a laptop with Scantool software from Toyota. I recently came across the download from Toyota at this website

I searched around the forum and I seen mention of a download of Toyota's Tech stream program but wasn't sure if u have to register as a dealer etc and actually pay for this product. Because the above link u do once u have completed the download anyone else have any more info into this matter.


I've been playing around with a OTC 3111PRO Trilingual Scan Tool OBD II which is really good tool if anyone's in the market but I am just so a custom to the tech stream was kinda missing it. any info would be awesome thanks.

I followed his thread with an Amazon cheapie cable and a dusty old XP laptop and it works fine.

He used the Chinese MVCI from that thread posting I linked to. The drivers for that cable come with it when you purchase it from ebay or amazon, and I have the driver for download in the dropbox link in that thread posting as well. It'll install straight into Techstream and work with the program perfectly. Any version you want of Techstream is also available in the dropbox. Just go through from the beginning and figure out which cable you want to get and what kind of computer you're going to install it on and let me know if you have any questions.

I used the driver from the thread. I have not touched the disk that came with the cable.

I do Have one question... Does it give u access to TIS (TIS is basically a Alldata or a OnDemand5)Toyota's manuals and diagrams, basically at the dealer it was linked directly with Techstream so when u need to see a diagram etc u could access from the vehicle and also flash the ECM and do ecm updates control Transmission components etc. I am ordering the cables this week so I am really curious on this download I remember going to OH in 2006 getting trained on this program it was like amazing what u could do back then end of 2005 start of 2006 when this became active use at the dealer, could only imagine now. may be little rusty at first. Lexus aspect of techstream was amazing.

Uhhh...No. If you find anything that does get into TIS, please post it up. You can buy a subscription to TIS, but I don't know if you can put that together with this program and replicate what you had at the dealer in terms of the linkage. It would be fun to try, but TIS ain't cheap ($15 for 48 hours/$75 per month).

Nope, no TIS. When you initially set up a legit Techstream Toughbook, one of the first steps is filling out a form with all of your network info, dealer info and other such verification things. With that and constant access to the internet, Techstream is supposed to be constantly connected online to TIS. Whether you actually open the internet and go to TIS or not, Techstream should be running in sync with TIS. When you do a Health Check, it actually automatically uploads that info to TIS recording everything the Health Check found. Then you can open TIS at any time and see what DTCs were stored in any ecu at any time in the past whenever it was used on a car. All of that TIS functionality is absent entirely.

The only way you can access it is by getting a subscription or using your own login. And with that comes some difficulty. For instance, if you work for a dealership, and you have a TIS login, it won't work for you at home because the website won't see the network info associated with your username that it would have if you were at work. One way around that in some cases is if you have a school login because those are open to be used outside of Toyota facilities..at least they were anyway.

Oh, and no flashing ECMs with these cables. While the Mongoose cables are supposed to support it, you would have to have access to the calibration file which is acquired from TIS. Assuming you have a Mongoose cable, have access to TIS, and can get the exact calibration file you need, you could try to reflash an ECM, but I wouldn't risk it. I know sometimes reflashes with Techstream Lite (Laptop and Mongoose cable) would fry computers during the programming.

I basically monitor my live engine data with an iPhone, Bluetooth dongle in the OBD2 port, and an app on my phone that allows me to add in custom PIDs (which I had to do for the trans temp). I can see things like transmission temps, calculated load, O2 voltage and things like that. Would Tech Stream allow you to access more information? I'd be interested in viewing info like such as injector duty cycle, but haven't found a way to do that with my current setup.

It will show you much much more than any of those. Here is a typical view of engine live data.

How are you connecting an iPhone via bluetooth? Every time I've ever tried to pair, I get issues due to apple's restricted bluetooth stack. I ended up getting a wifi OBDII dongle and connected that way.
