tell me a little bit about what ive bought....

As mentioned in my intro thread, just bought a 2006 sport edition with 4.0 and 4x4. Basically im a ford man and wanted to try a yota out. I can tell you everything there is to know about Rangers and F150s from what each trim level gets and doesnt get. Toyota I know nothing, diddly, nada about. All i know is i bought a very clean Sport.

Things I know about it:

-Has 4.0 V6
-4x4
-It has alpine amp under passenger seat but was told it was factory. I dont even k ow if its hooked up because i have an aftermarket pioneer navi unit. Is this stock?
-has steering wheel controls, hill decent control, a little button to the left of steering wheel that looks like it has something to do with transfer case

So someone tell me a little bit about the sport package i bought. The features it has. What was nd of gears do I have, do I have a locker, elocker, or limited slip? What ia the button to the left of steering wheel i talked about above. How much can i tow? Etc...

Congrats and welcome to the T4R family. Ill start with commonalities and then drill down a little to specifics on your truck.

First, all V6 4wd T4r's have multi-mode 4wd, meaning it can be in 2wd, 4HI unlocked, 4HI locked, 4LO unlocked, and 4LO locked. The locked / unlocked refers to the locking Torsen center differential, the control for which is that button to the left of the steering wheel with the 'x' on the transfer case. If you are in 4HI unlocked (you will just see a green 4wd icon on the instrument cluster) you can safely drive with no problems on the pavement every day in full-time 4WD mode. Pressing the locking swith will lock the torsen and turn your truck into an off-pavement only rig, similar to your old Ranger. The same goes true for 4LO, you can drive in 4LO unlocked with no problems on the pavement, its only when you engage that switch that you are now in part-time mode.

Here is where poeple often have issues. In 4HI/4LO unlocked, traction control is still engaged. Toyota's version of traction control also inhibits throttle to reduce wheel spin. So, if you are stuck or pulling away from a stop on a slick surface (ice, snow, mud, etc) and the wheels spin, the throttle will cut out and you wont really move. Locking the center diff eliminates this issue and on 08+ models (I think) Toyota let you deactivate this traction control mode separtely from 4WD. In 4LO locked mode, traction control actually helps you by acting like a limited slip (applies brakes to slipping wheel) to maintain traction. You can engage 4HI while moving up to 55mph and lock it while moving as well, though not as fast. You must be stopped in Neutral to put it in 4LO.

Ok, lots of 4WD stuff becuase these trucks have so many options and modes, you just have to play with them all to see what works best in a given situation. Bottom line, due the electrically actuated center diff lock, its best to anticipate needing it locked up rather than relying on being able to do it after you are already stuck because it can take a couple secs to get all aligned.

I dont know anything about the stock audio systems so someone else will have to chime in on that. SE's mostly came with XREAS, a type of hydraulic suspensions system designed to reduce roll and improve handling in corners. You can tell if your truck has it by the hydraulic lines coming off the shocks. It is not serviceable so if it ever leaks you are better off replacing with standard aftermarket equipment. SE's also have slightly larger brakes and rotors than some other models. I believe all V6's have a 5000lb towing limit. Most of the SE package aside from XREAS is cosmetic, primarily the hood scoop and wheels, although the wheels were also available on Limited's.

Awesome!!! That was extremely helpful. I know my ranger was awesome offroad and it even had an open diff. Never got stuck, not even close. The yota sounds the same as the ranger too like eing able to engage on the fly. Only difference i s having the unlocked or locked mode, that is definitely different. This thing i bet is beast iff road with shirt wheel base.

How is it geared? Im excited about 5kthe lbs to pull, that too is what my ranger couod pull

You also have ATRAC 2 when locked in 4Lo. It's a traction aid system that uses the brakes on wheels independently to get over obstacles. There's lots of info on that system on this forum. And someone has to say it, this thread is worthless without some pictures of your new truck!!

Lol ive posted the same pic in two other threads, check em out. I need to take some more of it.

Ok so now what about ither features like the sound system. Special speakers? Is the amp stock? Etc...

Congrats on your new ride

Your V6 has a timing chain, as opposed to a belt. It will last the life of the motor and has no scheduled replacement that I know of. Which is good.

Another good thing to do, is to go to the Toyota owners website and create an account.
Just Google "Toyota Owners". It should be Toyota(dot)com/owners

Plug in your VIN and you will have access to the complete service history of your truck (Dealership services) and access to all of the manuals in digital form.

That Alpine amp under your seat is definitely not stock. The amp was most likely driving an aftermarket subwoofer, that is probably not hooked up anymore. If you had the JBL Synthesis audio system, the stock sub should still be behind the interior finish, on the passenger side, at the back of the truck.
