Tell me if I screwed up my transmission cooler install...

My 1997 SR5 had been sitting in the driveway for almost 2 years. It blew a transmission cooler hose, I had another truck to use, life got in the way.

Last year I got around to installing a separate B&D tranny cooler and I was meticulous about getting the flow direction right. I mounted mine sideways with the "in" line at the bottom and the return line from the top. Before making the final attachment of the "in line" to the B&D cooler I used that line to change the old tranny fluid by adding a quart, turning on the engine and it came out of that line until I filled quart bottle with old fluid, turn off engine and add another quart, repeat until all old fluid was replaced with new fluid. Let it run a while till hot, checked level was OK, but did not drive anywhere as it was not registered. About a month ago I changed out the plugs and wires and she started right up. Again, did not drive, too much stuff in the way.

Today I cleared it out and took it down the block. The engine was revving high and it took a long time to shift. Got a couple of hundred yards, decided to get back to the driveway fast but that was all she wrote. In all gears the engine would run but I went nowhere. When I put it back into PARK there was a slight grinding of gears. The A/TP, "Unengaged Park" warning light came on?

With the help of a friend I got it the final 100 yds to my driveway and checked my lines. There are 2 metal tubes coming out of the tranny sump on the passenger side. I read a lot of the threads on installs here, the top line is from the tranny out to the cooler and the bottom line is the return from the cooler to the sump, correct?

I figure I must have had it right when I changed the fluid or it would not have pumped out the old stuff.

So did my transmission just die from sitting too long? Or do the symptoms lead to the possibility it's hooked up wrong? No burning smell, fluid smells fine....

Any help appreciated.

If it is 4wd make sure that the t-case shifter is fully shifted to either lo or hi. Just a wild ass guess.

F*** ME, you're a genius!

I guess it had been so long since I drove the thing I didn't realize it wasn't fully in gear. Just went outside and put it in gear and it's seems fine.

I'm an ass, I'm an ass, I'm an ass....

thanks so much.

I was thinking the same thing when you said, "grinding when putting it in park." the only way that can happen is if the tcase got into neutral.

Glad you got it figured out. At least you were close to home when this happened. I had it happen while parked on a rock about 50 miles from home and 30 miles from any road. Spent half an hour looking at the engine and everything to make sure nothing was wrong, still didn't work. Took 10 seconds for me to look up AT/P online and switch it back from neutral. That'll never happen again. :)

Edit: it was actually the rock I'm parked on in my profile picture. Lol.
