Tell me it ain't so....trans acting up.

This happened twice this week. I would start it up, wait a few seconds, and kick it in gear. It would just rev. I stick it back in neutral and then into gear again and it goes.

I hope it's just a fluke but it happened twice now is making me worry. It's my DD.

Start with the basics, how is your flulid? Is it low, dirty, burnt etc?

Did you try manually shifting down the L on the shifter?

Does it just rev in reverse too?
 
Does the 4R have an anti drain back valve on the lines? I had a 1998 Jeep that did and they were known for having this valve stick closed which caused the fluid to not circulate through the cooler and overheat the transmission. This Jeep had a 5.9L V8 under the hood with some work done to it and when I had the transmission built I removed the valve from the lines. This allowed the lined to drain out over night and I would have to prime the transmission each morning which was not a big deal in my eyes. All I did was put the transmission in neutral for about 5 seconds before putting it in gear and I was good to go. If the 4R has this feature and the valve is stuck open, that could be the issues. Try putting it in neutral for 5 seconds then into reverse or drive and see what happens.
 
Sounds like the clutch pack is going, not to be the bearer of bad news. Check for the pink milkshake.

And no, there is no anti drain back valve in the lines.
 
Ok I'm thinking it was a false alarm. This morning the truck revved up again so I put it in neutral, back in D, and then it revved again and let loose with a bang. I believe my rear brakes are sticking. I had a leak on the driver's side and I have yet to replace the shoes so they are marinated a bit and it has been freezing out. But damn it felt exactly like my 00 TJ when the 32RH pooped out.

Check your driveshaft joints, mine did the same thing when the joints failed.....slapped on Tom new shaft and all good now.
