Temp. and Clock Reading

Are these displayed constantly or do you have to push a button to see either/or?

I'm getting closer to getting my 1st 4Runner and I'm getting excited.

The clock is always on.

Using the button next to the climate control display, you can change the temperature display to show mpg, range, avg speed, something I can't remember, or no display at all.

you can cycle thru the "miles to empty, mpg, avg speed, and blank". the clock and temp is constant. also the temp gauge only goes to -22F, which kinda sucks for me since during winter it gets colder than that alot up here. i think we hit this winter all the way to -34F and it stayed at -22F. but i have seen -54F ambient (-90F wind chill) once back in early 90's.

also range to empty, you cannot reset.

only mpg/avg speed can be reset.

If you get the V8 model, do yourself a favor and do not cycle through the MPG. It will make you want to cry.

acccuracy of MPG readout

I have a V8. Anyone know how accurate the MPG reading is or how long it should take to stabilize? A few days ago I filled up just before I got on a highway. On the highway I reset the MPG to see what I was getting. I think it started out somewhere around 40 mpg. I figured it would show a true reading after a few miles but after 10 miles or so it was still up around 26 to 28 MPG.
I stopped paying attention and haven't looked at it lately. Now, it may be a new 2004 but I know I'm NOT getting 28 MPG! Is it broken or did I just give up too soon?

My MPG display has been pretty consistent since I first got the truck - about 2 mpg better than the actual value that I determine from my fuel and mileage records. Other people in this and other forums have observed the same, that the MPG Display shows about 2 mpg better than actual. Yours is an anomaly, is your range display equally off? Perhaps you should take it to the dealer as a warranty repair.

dont reset it while you are moving. the mpg reading will show some weird numbers depending if your accelerating or coasting. if you reset it and then coast down a hill, you can get it to hit 99 mpg.

edit: there is a thread around here with pics of a 99 mpg reading

best bet is to reset it just before you leave the pump or put it into drive. if you reset after you leave or when you are at a complete stop later on, you will still get weird readings.

i reset my mpg after every fill up and just before i put the vehicle in drive. i consistently get around 14-17 mpg readings after about 1-2 miles and for the rest of the tank.

that's about right for highway only driving. it's the accelerating that kills your milage. i don't have a new 4runner, but does the computer also show instantaneous gas milage as well as average? it's interesting to watch the instantaneous gas milage. i test drove a bmw that had that gauge. accelerating from a light i was less than 1mpg, but up at 70 on the highway i was reading about 40mpg. if you average that all togeher over time, you get about 25mpg (in the bmw at least - much wose for the 4runner).

Nope, the 4runner doesn't have the instantaneous readings. I'm with you though, I think instantaneous is more useful since it let's you know when you're doing something that sucks up the gas.

I agree 100%. After I fill up and reset, I start off at 19-20 mpg and I am very happy. I stop at a traffic light and then accelerate again, I decrease to 15-16 mpg. That is something I try not to look at while driving. Oh, and yes, this is without using the AC and heat! :dammit:
