Temp/compass mirror?

Anyone out there ever tried to get one of these to work in a 3rd Gen? I am totally ignorant as to whether the compass and thermometer are integral parts of the actual mirror or whether some external connections ( other than power) would be required.

Don't remember the year. Any GM mirror will work. I got few for sale. If you need one PM me. All the wires are labelled and easy to install. Also comes with the temperature probe.
 
Thanks nissanh. I have to admit that I've become a bit of a slacker in searching for stuff here. SO much info!
 
Do some searching around for Gentex mirrors on ebay and amazon (the compass/temp version is the Gentex GENK20A). I've bought 3 of them for different vehicles and all have worked well. Last one was for my 5th gen 4runner, just dimming only since the 4r comes with a temp in the dash and HomeLink in the overhead console.

Unless your 4runner came with a temp display elsewhere, you'll need to run the supplied temp sensor to the front of your grill. The install is easy enough though, and the link above is really well-detailed.

Edit: didn't realize Nissanh has a few for sale before posting. Might be cheaper to get one from him instead of a brand new one on ebay/amazon.

I saw this thread last week and thinking back on the unscheduled 3 & 1/2 360's that I did at 55 mph on the way to work one morning last winter thought I'd give this a try. Bought one of nissnh's mirrors for a good price and I've gotta say its in great shape and he couldn't have shipped any faster. A fairly easy install other than having to glue the windshield bracket/button on twice. I used the Chrysler/VW kit from NAPA and the glue that comes in the kitsis next to worthless. I used 2 part epoxy and I'm hoping I never have to remove it. :ballchain: The mirror works great though!

I also got one of Nissanh's mirrors and it is very nice with fast shipping too.

I have a windshield button question: I got the MK200 button from OReillys

The backing on the button is 3M VHB and that's the Very High Bond which is very good stuff

Did anybody have a problem with the mirror falling off with that stuff?_____
 
When i put my mirror on that i bought from nissanh i had the mirror fall off twice using the included adhesive and then my old man put two part epoxy on there. it hasn't moved since and it's been well over 2 years and on both ends of the temperature spectrum (-25F and 115F)

I got one from @nissanh , and it works perfect. It's auto dim with compas and temperature. There's a sensor that needs to be wired and you need to find a power source. I ran my sensor under the hood. Love the mirror. I had a problem with finding the right product to mount my mirror. After few products and the mirror falling of. I don't know how but it's been holding up well now.

Did you peel the old adhesive off or just the way it was?

The mirror is great by the way... tested the functions and held it up where it will sit/market it out for placement.......Nice :)

I agree, very strong stuff.... I seen them put two L brackets on fiberglass and a board across it and sit on it.
My thoughts would be the sun beating on it and melting the glue. Anything i use on cheap velcro on out here melts and falls off the fiberglass.
 
Don't worry about the sun's heat. I saw a video showing how a mirror glass is mounted in a sky scraper in Dubai (UAE) with this VHB. This amazed me and worries me because what if I want to remove it? lol..

I'm going to give it a shot.....If it falls off 2 part epoxy to the rescue.
Definitely a small problem in a big world
 
The 3M VHB adhesive did not work. cleaned windshield with alcohol and wiped off any residue.... installed the button with the 3M VHB and taped it down to the windshield for 3 days.... withing 20 minutes of putting the mirror on it fell off.
2 part epoxy to the rescue and left it on for 24 hours before installing mirror.
Perfect and it is a very nice mirror to have.
