Temp control knob makes popping noise

I have a 98 (no auto climate control) and the temp control knob turns pretty hard and makes a "popping' noise. There is a detent in it that seems to work ok, but the thing turns roughly and then pops and rotates further when it pops. Anyone experience this? I currently have the dash pulled apart for a head unit install so if I could fix this too that would be awesome. Is there a way to lube it or adjust it at all? I can't see anything that I can mess with..

My 98 does this, doesn't effect anything and everything works so haven't bothered to do anything about it
