Temp gauge failed

I have a 2001 4runner 3.4L. Temp gauge is not reading all of a sudden. Seems to be running fine. The head gaskets had been recently (2 months ago) replaced cuz water pump failed and it over heated. I am guessing it could be the ECT sensor or even a fuse. It did not appear to over heat today but I cant be sure. Anyone have any ideas or experiences with this?

Update..Apparently there is a ECT Sensor and a ECT Sender on the 3.4L. The sensor is on the front top of the intake manifold and communicates with the computer and the sender is on the back top of the intake near the firewall and communitcates with the gauge. I had been focusing on the Sensor in the front and after research(The ncttora repair manuel) found that the sender is seperate and is located in the back and when I checked that out I found the wire was detached. So I just plugged it back in and it worked.

Hey my temp gauge is not working currently, I dont really know where to look for this. So Could you help me locate this sensor please? You will be my hero.

My guage never reads past middle and is a common issue. That is why I have a scanguage II in order to make sure I am reading proper temps.

I have not been able to find the temp gauge sending unit. It believe it should be a one wire sensor and, from vague drawing in the FSM, it looks like it is on the top of the engine. Folks have said it is back near the fire wall. Is it visible from the top of the engine without removing anything or do you have to take off the air intake manifold? Spent about 20 minutes crouched on top of the engine yesterday without success.

Thanks,

Buckaroo

My son just replaced the vqlv3 cover gaskets and the temp gauge is not working. I tested the ect and it’s ohms are a little off but if I unplug it the truck won’t start and it throws codes.

Plug it back in reset the battery and the engine starts so I assume it’s at least semi functional. It was working fine before he replaced the gaskets. I cannot find this sending unit upthread. Anyone have any pictures or a link to something showing where it is.
