Temp gauge not accurate?

Hello all I'm having some issues lately with the temp gauge i think? While back noticed the gauge wouldn't go above the halfway point to where it should go so I quickly ordered a OEM thermostat from amazon to see if that was the issue. Seems its not.. The other day the gauge wouldn't read above cold after driving for over an hour!

Maybe the gauge is having issues? Maybe the temp sensor is bad? I'm considering just putting a temp sensor in to see if it helps but figured id check if anyone else has experienced this! Thanks for your help!

If coolant level was low enough to uncover temp sensor, it would read cold. If your thermostat was stuck, engine would overheat. That's not the problem. Either it is temp sensor, temp sensor wiring, or instrument cluster causing problem.

I think you can unplug the sensor to see what the gauge will do and maybe short the two connector pins to get the full range. That would verify the wiring and cluster but will probably set a code. I'm unsure what the range of these sensors are resistance wise and didn't find much gen specific on google. Could put it in the freezer, ohm it out and then warm it in water to check it.

Have you noticed any other issues, like overheating or odd engine behavior?
Before installing a new temp sensor, check the wiring and connections.
And maybe, also look for leaks, ensure the radiator and coolant reservoir are filled to the correct levels, and check the cooling fans. Plus, verify if there's no air trapped in the cooling system.
