Temperature Issues

Hey all,

So I'm here in central Florida where we have seen upper 90's with all the humidity you can imagine and then some. I am running a scanguage II and constantly track my water temp and ATF temp. I have a tranny cooler installed and about 119k miles, original trans and engine.

In stop-and-go traffic I'm seeing water temp shift between about 198-203 degrees, trans temp likes to sit around 185-195 in really bad traffic. On the highway trans drops to around 155-160 and water to 193. I feel like my highway temps are alright, but the stop-and-go is a little worrying to me, especially the trans. I'm not sure the previous owner ever did a trans flush but it's a fairly new radiator with about 12k miles on it.

My question is, do you all believe I would benefit from going ahead and doing a tranny flush, will that help with temp issues? Or are these temps to be expected in this type of weather? Other than that I'm having no issues whatsoever. I might just be a little paranoid but better safe than sorry.

Was your water pump ever changed? I would go ahead and flush the trans if you arent sure. Probably due for one if it was never done.

Water pump was done with timing belt at 102k according to PO's records. Thanks for the insight, I'll likely go ahead and do the flush.
 
Those temps sound perfectly normal. 188 under a light load and 197 under a heavy load is my trucks normal operating temps. I think anything from 188 to 205-ish is normal, perhaps even a bit higher depending on the climate.

The dash gauge doesn't go into the red until a bit after 230F.
 
Sounds like you may be a candidate for a new Aisin fan clutch. If it is original, replace it. High humidity makes short life of them, as I can attest. Make sure to torque the fan clutch bolts to the fan at 65 inch/lbs.

I would just drain some tranny fluid then add some new.
 
That's normal. Sitting in traffic the torque converter is just churning fluid and building heat. Get driving and the converter locks and temps start to drop. My diesel would run 210-215* in the trans sitting in traffic and it had a cooler the size of our radiators on it. Nothing to be worried about. Now if you are driving down the road and it's hitting 210-215* then you should be worried. Sitting in traffic don't worry about it. If you want, you can pop it in neutral and rev the engine a little to help circulate the fluid but most of the time that's a hassle.
