Temperature Knob Stuck to Cold

Hello everyone. I have a 2000 SR5 V6 with 170k miles that I've owned since new.

It started getting cold recently and I went to turn the temperature dial to hot, but it only moved about 1/2 of the way from full cold. I kept applying more pressure and forced the knob to full hot, however while doing so it made 2-3 loud clicking sounds. Now when I turn the knob back towards full cold, I can only get it to go about 1/2 of the way before I have to again force it (with the loud clicks again).

Anyway, problem is that even at full hot now, its not hot at all. I searched the forums yesterday and found this thread:

Which was somewhat helpful in that I got under the dash and was able to move the heater controls to 'somewhat hot'.

So at least now I have some heat, but its definitely not full hot. Ideally besides getting all the heat back, I'd like the knob to work!

Anyone have this problem? Did I break something by forcing the knob the first time? Any suggestions on how to tackle this issue?

If you look on the right side of the picture, you will see that there is a silver thing with a hole in the middle of it.

If I am not mistaken, that should be connected on the little white nub directly below it. Again, if I am not mistaken, that cable is what connects to your knob and pulls or pushes to actuate the white arm to control the heat. (think hood latch)

i have this same exact issue, i was just about to make a thread when i saw yours. any help will be greatly appreciated since its starting to get cold! only heat i have is the rear heat that i run at full blast but doesnt help me in the front to much lol

i was able to go underneath the dash and move that arm so no the knob on the dash is freed up but it still doesn't seem like it goes all the way over and i still have no heat what so ever when its turned

my cable is connected and i still have no heat. my dial wouldn't turn at all, after pushing on the mechanism under the glove box it freed up my dial but still doesn't seem to turn as far as it should. and when turned to heat i can not tell any difference


*edit well i found my issue as well. my cable is frozen somewhere between the mechanism under the glove box and the fire wall. the previous owner must have disconnected the cable from the valve. i was able to open the valve manually and now have heat. no the decision to re run the cable or not

I hope I posted the link properly. :smashputer:

It looks like the link is fine. If it's also disconnected on the engine side firewall then previous owner may have disabled a leaking heater core. Something to check.

Same problem in my 2000 sr5, its been -50 in fairbanks but finally starting to warm up. I found that once it gets warm enough driving throughout the day (hours and hours) the knob turns both ways completely. I just decided to leave it on HOT until it warms up.

Well my cable is completely seized up. So what i did was I just went in the engine bay and opened up the water valve completely so it's full hot. Then once summer hits I just close the water valve. I haven't made an attempt yet to run a new cable

Can you take a picture of the water valve. I'm not sure I know where it is.

Darn, beat me to it! Yeah it wouldn't matter if the cable was hooked up or not. Cables will tend to rust up, seize inside of their plastic sheathing and cause this issue. I've seen it on many different makes and models. The tip-off was finding it disconnected and still having resistance turning the knob.

Temp Controls

I have a 1998 4Runner. When I turn the temp knob to hot it has a rubber band effect and will turn back at least a quarter. Same when I turn it to cold. SO at this point the air will not get hot or cold. it is all the time cool? Anyone else had this kind of problem? Help?
