Temperature Rises

What would cause the temeperature to rise while i am going up hills on the highway or sometimes while i am in idle at a stop light?? After i get back going on steady ground the temperature goes back to normal.???

What year? Stick or auto transmission? I-4, V6 or V8?

I would start with the thermostat.

Is your engine fan running? Missing blades? Most are running if the engine is running, but many of my friends have switched to electric fans.

When was the last time you had your radiator serviced?

Have you checked your fluid levels? You may just be low on coolant. I would also check the oil level as well. If those are good, assuming your fan is spinning, then I would start with the t-stat.
