Terrible experience with Orange Boxx Fabrication PSD rack

I ordered the 5th Gen PSD rack online and a couple of weeks later I received it. It wasn't packaged well and none of the edges (of which there are many) were deburred properly, which resulted in me slicing half a dime worth of skin off one of my knuckles.

Still excited, I quickly did a test fit and much to my dismay, the bracket to mount it wasn't even close to where it needed to be:

I emailed Darrel (the owner/fabricator) the pictures and asked if I was doing something wrong. He said he'd need to make me a new bracket and ship it out. I offered to take measurements for him to make sure the new one works and he said the pictures were enough. About 1.5 weeks later (yesterday), I received the new bracket, which was seemingly put together in haste and quite poorly:

Original properly made one on the right (bent sheet stock), replacement on the left (cut and welded)

Replacement bracket has weld/grinding marks

I emailed Darrel again and asked what was going on with the replacement bracket and asked if, once I test-fit it and confirmed it's the right size, he could ship me a proper bracket--I explained that I was worried about the weld-strength on a load-bearing member and that the powder coating might flake off in those areas.

He informed me that the bracket was bent the wrong way and instead of making it correctly, he cut it and welded it the other direction. He then said he'd ship me "yet another one" (welded bracket) as though I was in the wrong followed by a condescending, "If you are afraid of load bearing with a weld please do not go across any bridges. Do not drive your truck. I would not send out an inferior part to anyone."

I decided to ignore the rude comment and test-fit the bracket because I was still excited to get the rack installed. Turned out the replacement bracket he sent was also incorrect--why he didn't take me up on my offer to provide him measurements, I don't know:

At this point I was understandably annoyed. I emailed him the pictures and told him I was no longer interested in being a guinea pig for his product nor did I appreciate his condescending attitude. I asked him to verify the return address so that I could return the item to him. His response was even more appalling:

I refuse to take it back. Send it and it will set in the box you send it in. You have pushed me to this point. I have been honest with you. But you pushed to get get and get. I am working on the problem .

Followed by another condescending email:

The product works just fine if you the customer can read instructions and install it correctly.

I will note that his install instructions are terrible--no pictures and terribly worded instructions--but that's besides the point.

I explained that I provided photographic evidence (two times now) that his product didn't work as advertised and that I want to return it for a full refund. He replied:

My company has sold over 300 copies of this same unit. None of them has complained not once . None of them has returned any of them and all are in use. There is a restocking fee for the unit. It is stated that way on the website. Send it back and pay the restocking fee.

There's no restocking fee listed anywhere on his site nor should I have to pay a restocking fee for something that does not work as advertised after patiently working with him to get it to install properly. A member on the forum that I sold my NTGs to has this rack and said he wasn't a big fan of it (poor mounting setup/vibration issues). I wish I would have listened to him and not bought this.

I spent $23 to ship the rack back to him and filed a chargeback with my credit card company--never doing business with Orange Boxx Fabrication again. The product is a good idea, but poorly designed/manufactured and the customer service is terrible. Does anyone know of a similar product out there?

I was considering one of these, I am rethinking the idea now. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm pretty dismayed by this experience. I was really looking forward to the rack and mounting stuff to it (first-aid kit, tow strap, Mag-Lite, etc.). I like supporting small shops and fabricators--they tend to be great to work with, but I clearly found an exception.

Thanks for this write up. I was actually look at getting both the rear window racks here in the next month or so, but going to skip it now. Can honestly fab something similar myself and have it fit.

Like I get stuff may get bent in shipping and a bracket won't line up. It happens. But how he handled the situation is entirely something else.

I had been looking at getting one of these. Went to the website and it was so bad trying to sign up to get the discount code I gave up, just wasn't meant to be.

That bracket looks like hell. :rockthrow:

I would have gladly kept taking pictures/measurements and worked with him, but a few things really bugged me:

1) Unfinished product--leaving that many large burrs on something a person is going to handle is bad manufacturing. The mounting setup is not well thought out and will vibrate/rattle.

2) Willingness to cut corners--instead of building the replacement bracket the right way after bending it the wrong way, he cut it and added unnecessary welds on a load-bearing member.

3) Customer service--self-explanatory :mmph:

id file a charge back with your cc company if you can asap.

I did just that. Everything is well-documented (pictures, emails, receipts), so I expect they'll give me a full refund. I'm still out the $23 for return shipping, but I'll consider that a lesson.

Lol, I like the remark about following directions...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this looks like one real easy install considering it fits.

At that point he was simply trying to insult me. Prior to that, it was clear between our emails back and forth and the pictures I sent him that the bracket was the problem and not me lining up two holes.

I've had thes racks in for over a year now and they work great, but I too did have some issues with quality control. Ordered my set of driver and passenger racks and received them promptly, but was misssing all the mounting brackets and hardware. Was told they should be in there, like I was lying about these missing parts. After being somewhat blunt and dick-ish he agreeed to overnight me the parts. Bottom line, no customer service and it shows true colors. Sorry to hear about your experience. I guess I got out of the situation better off

And I thought my experience was bad. This guy is clearly in the wrong. Sorry to hear about it. Hopefully his future sales will reflect his attitude.. s****y

Implying you're lying about not getting the mounting brackets and hardware is such a silly thing to do--what would you even want a second set of brackets and hardware for?

What was your experience?

What was your experience?

I had a crappy experience this past week but with another product and business.

That looks like ass and he's being an ass. Glad I didn't buy one.

My friend has his 1st Taco at Rago, I told him to pass on they should work on something like this. Bet they could do it correctly.

This is disappointing. I thought the concept was pretty solid on this, but the execution seemed a bit lacking.

Mainly due to how it's not tied in as structurally as it should be, so stuff could turn into a missile during crashes. Hopefully they correct the issues and work on their customer support as one bad product, or one that's lacking, shouldn't completely tarnish someone's reputation for future products.

I agree with O.P. Dude needs a 101 course on costumer service ... I had a similar situation, not with the truck but similar ( new house build ) and some I would smack straight out and others were very polite and gave me $hit for free and replaced what was not done right the first time, without Attitude ....

Too bad for him :) tell him to come on T4R.org a sec !

Wait he sent you a second one, crappily made, and it was still short? Is it possible this bracket is for a different gen? That's kinda s***ty man. I looked at his website and the bracket def looks longer in his pix. One thing though how would this panel hold up had the bracket worked? Is it pretty sturdy once installed and then add weight of accessories tied to the rack?

I had an outstanding experience. When i got mine they wouldnt fit because i jave 3rd row. I shipped them back and he re made racks for 3rd row and even had them powder coated in my choice of color. Great fit aimple install... not sure what has changed but that sucks

Even though you own a 5th Gen, seems to me you'd want this in "General", for exposure. Service this poor should be rewarded. I'll leave it to you to tag -mod- if you wish.
